about

Every advanced society in the galaxy relies on the technology of the Protheans, an ancient species that vanished fifty thousand years ago. After discovering a cache of Prothean technology on Mars in 2148, humanity is spreading to the stars; the newest interstellar species, struggling to carve out its place in the greater galactic community.

On the edge of colonized space, ship commander and Alliance war hero David Anderson investigates the remains of a top secret military research station; smoking ruins littered with bodies and unanswered questions. Who attacked this post and for what purpose? And where is Kahlee Sanders, the young scientist who mysteriously vanished from the base–hours before her colleagues were slaughtered?

Sanders is now the prime suspect, but finding her creates more problems for Anderson than it solves. Partnered with a rogue alien agent he can’t trust and pursued by an assassin he can’t escape, Anderson battles impossible odds on uncharted worlds to uncover a sinister conspiracy . . . one he won’t live to tell about. Or so the enemy thinks.

BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Drew Karpyshyn's Mass Effect: Ascension.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A quite good s-f story, not exceptionally good A quite good s-f story, not exceptionally good. It's worth a read though, especially because of the great universe in which the story takes place and all the politics.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good prequel to a great game This book is a prequel to BioWare's action role-playing game Mass Effect. I was able to finish reading this book in less than 24 hours. It was action-packed and fast paced, with believable characters. I have to admit though that this book would be much more enjoyable to read once you have played the game itself. The author doesn't go into explicit detail about every single environment, alien species, or unique elements and this may throw off some people's reading experience. Even so, the book was well-written and it was nice to learn more about the supporting characters in the game. I highly recommend this book, especially to Mass Effect fans.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow... This book, like the game, is truly spectacular. Good descriptions, and plot. The book takes place just before the time of the game, giving you backgrounds on the main character's in the game like Saren and Anderson. Drew Karpyshyn is a great writer, and I'm hoping to see some more published work outside of games.
