He’s empty, inhuman, dishonest, and cruel.

She’s never wanted anyone more.

Sydney has lived in fear for eight years after freelance assassin, Merc, failed to rescue her from a cult-like militia group. Left in the hands of a sadistic man, she did whatever it took to survive. But Merc’s last words gave her hope. Hope he’d be back to finish the job.

After Merc is betrayed by her father, Sydney becomes his target. He wields sex, drugs, lies, and love like weapons. Merc knows just what to do with a fearful girl like Sydney. He’s in control. He’s always in control.

But Sydney Channing is not what she appears. And Merc’s only redeeming act—the very one that made Sydney’s life a living hell—might just be his worst mistake yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Worth the Journey Through the Darkness! I received an advance review of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review, and before receiving the book, J.A. warned those of us that received it that it was very dark and that if we were not prepared for that, then not to read the book. She was right. The book is very dark, so I’ll pass that same warning along to readers. However, if you take that warning to heart, you will miss some of the most wonderful tears in your eyes, heart in your throat, excruciatingly heart stopping moments that will stay with you for a long time to come... and that my friend, makes the journey through the darkness completely worthwhile. No one, and I mean no one can spin a story and draw you into it like J.A. Huss. Her characters are so real and multi-faceted. As in real life, no character is all bad or all good, and this author has a true talent for exploring all sides of her characters, allowing the reader to connect with the character on a much deeper level. Nowhere is that more evident than in this book where both of the main characters are struggling with who and what they are. As different as these characters undoubtedly are from the typical reader, you still can’t help but relate to these characters in one way or another and to feel connected to them, so please don’t let the subject matter or the darkness of the book scare you away. If you hang in there and give this book the full read it deserves, you will soooo not be disappointed.
