WHEN the Athenians were desirous of doing honour to the memory of Miltiades, who had exterminated the immense host of the Persians with a handful of Greeks, they decreed that he should be painted in the Peciles in the act of giving the signal for that memorable combat. And the idea was a wise one, that such a picture was a more honourable monument than one more sumptuous; because if any youth of Attica, or stranger, after contemplating the picture in the Peciles, should inquire,--who is he b who is directing the small army against that torrent of soldiers? he would be instantly answered by some old Athenian--"that is Miltiades--there is the field of Marathon--the handful are the Greeks, and the countless host are the flower of Asia, collected for our destruction, and dissipated by the ability of the Athenian Commander." Of a kind with this idea of that Athens from which we derive so much elegant learning and so many noble examples, I regard the determination of the most illustrious Decurions of Genoa to publish this Codex diplomaticus of Christopher Columbus, the immortal discoverer of America. In fact, as this Collection was a present sent by the hero himself to a Genoese friend to be preserved in his native country, and is now published by the decree of the Civil Magistracy of Genoa: and as it contains new information both of the unknown hemisphere he dis covered as well as of the hardy navigator who was bold enough to commit himself to the ocean in search of it, whoever takes up this volume must say to himself, and to whoever hears him--" here we have at last the documents of that great man to whom we are indebted for the new world; he himself presented them to his country, and she now presents them to the whole civilized world."
