about

It's one of the most unique pieces of land, anywhere. A narrow sandbar separating Lake Ontario from Burlington Bay.

The Beach Strip has served as an Indian trail, later as a summer resort for those escaping the blast of a hot Hamilton summer, and then gradually as a year-round community.

The Beach was a popular spot to swim, especially on the lake side, but also in pockets of sandy beach on the bay side. Even those areas, of course, were swallowed up with the fill needed for the skyway, a bridge which was speedily upgraded on the drawing boards after the W.E. Fitzgerald took out the northern span of the bascule bridge, forcing the Queen Elizabeth Way traffic through the streets of Hamilton and Aldershot before a temporary span was put in place.

There has been devastating fires, a rail line along the pristine shoreline, raging storms, and bumper-to-bumper traffic, but the Fitzgerald was the catalyst that changed the way life was lived on the Beach - forever.

Memories of the Beach Strip paints a vivid picture of the Beach through the years.
