Rated 2 out of 5 by from Form way outpaces function If fabulous bookbinding were enough to make a great book of DIY fashion pieces, then this would be the book. I ordered it only to get a look inside, since the listing has no sample content, and the book is not available in store. On arrival, I was thrilled by the quality of the presentation - the stitched binding, the hefty envelope with the patterns inside, the overall design - but the thrill wore off as I gave the book a more in-depth peruse. The photos of the outfits are less than helpful; more stylish than informative. I would have preferred at least a front, side and back view of every outfit than valuable page space given over to arty shots of abandoned railway bridges and barns. The closest the book comes to a straight-on shot of any piece is clothing on a hanger instead of a human person. I also felt that the styling of all pieces actually worn by models was extra baggy. Admittedly, none of the pieces is overly tailored, but it ended up looking like the models were all swimming in unflattering bags of fine fabrics. The end result was that although the line drawings of the patterns themselves looked great, I felt like none of them would turn out as items I would feel good about wearing. In addition, there is no colour in this book. That's fine for a coffee table volume of high-fashion photography, but not great when I want to get excited about making a beautiful DIY wardrobe. So I get what the book's makers were going for: cool, sophisticated-yet-simple fashions for the home sewer. What they ended up with was a bit too cool to be helpful or inspiring.
