about

A lethal Breed warrior is called upon by his brethren in the Order to bodyguard a beautiful young widow he’s craved from afar, in this new novella in the "steamy and intense" (Publishers Weekly) Midnight Breed vampire romance series from New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Lara Adrian.

As a former Hunter bred to be a killing machine in the hell of Dragos's lab, Scythe is a dangerous loner whose heart has been steeled by decades of torment and violence. He has no room in his world for love or desire--especially when it comes in the form of a vulnerable, yet courageous, Breedmate in need of protection. Scythe has loved--and lost--once before, and paid a hefty price for the weakness of his emotions. He's not about to put himself in those chains again, no matter how deeply he hungers for lovely Chiara.

For Chiara Genova, a widow and mother with a young Breed son, the last thing she needs is to put her fate and that of her child in the hands of a lethal male like Scythe. But when she's targeted by a hidden enemy, the obsidian-eyed assassin is her best hope for survival . . . even at the risk of her heart.

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from "Midnight Unbound" by Lara Adrian. Book 14.6 in the Midnight Breed series. I just finished reading this book May 11, 2017. This is my review. I really enjoyed this novella addition to the Midnight Breed series. Scythe and Chiara were introduced in the last novella ("Midnight Untamed" - part of the 1001 Dark Nights collection). And right away, I was hoping that they would get their happily-ever-after. So happy they did! If you've never read any of the book from this series, this novella works well as a stand alone but is enjoyed more if you've at least read the previous novellas in the series because all the characters in the novellas are connected and these novellas kind of run their own story line within the world of the Midnight Breed. Scythe is a Gen One vampire and a Hunter. He was born and raised to be a killer in Dragos's lab. After being set free years ago by The Order, he's been on his own and living his own life. He doesn't work for The Order but has worked with them on occasion. Now his brother, Trygg, is asking for his help. Chiara and her son are being targeted and they need protection and Scythe is the only one available for the job. But Scythe doesn't do babysitting jobs. Especially a breedmate with a kid. It also doesn't help that Scythe has not been able to stop thinking about Chiara since he let her and her child stay with him when Chiara's sister-in-law was in trouble as well. But when he finds out a breed male actually broke into her house and almost assaulted her? He can't say no to protecting her. Chiara has never been separated from her son before. But to keep him safe, she'll do whatever she must. Even be guarded by the surliest breed male she's ever met. Scythe is a male she shouldn't be attracted to, but she is. He's nothing like her dead mate...which is a good thing. But just because he's her bodyguard, doesn't mean he can just boss her around. And the attraction there is between them? Yeah, it goes both ways, and they both know it. But can they each get over there past relationship troubles? Because maybe, there just might be something great between them..... I really enjoyed this book. Loved how strong and independent Chiara's character is. Scythe's background story is so tragic you just want him to get a happily-ever-after. Their chemistry together is excellent. The story flows really well and moves quickly. It holds your attention the entire time. Lots of action and a great story line. I really enjoyed this one and can't wait to read the next book.
