about

#1 New York Times bestseller Milk and Honey is a collection of poetry and prose about survival. About the experience of violence, abuse, love, loss, and femininity.

The book is divided into four chapters, and each chapter serves a different purpose. Deals with a different pain. Heals a different heartache. Milk and Honey takes readers through a journey of the most bitter moments in life and finds sweetness in them because there is sweetness everywhere if you are just willing to look.

You have to be aware that there are parts that can be tough to some people. It is truly an amazing book and all the recognition is well deserved.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful poetry but not for everyone This book is beautiful and some of this poetry really connects with you. However, this poetry is not for everyone, as I did have friends who did not enjoy it as much as I did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible! This book was gifted to me a few months ago. It was on my "To Be Read" list for the longest time and my cousin got it for me. At first I was a bit hesitant to read it because I wasn't much of a poetry fan. But as I read the first few pages, I began to see why poetry was such a beautiful and emotional genre to read. I found myself getting teary whilst reading it, with the occasional chills and goosebumps. Being 18, I found that most of the book was easy to relate to, not necessarily on a personal level, but because there were people in my life who have been through a lot of heartbreaking situations. I think this book is a beautiful antidote for healing and growing. Truly wonderful.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great book! Saw this book surrounding Tumblr & Twitter and had to check it out. It's a great book but like what some people say, it can be a bit overrated, but still a great read!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Truly Enjoyable I really enjoy reading this book There are short verses and I think a lot of women would be able to relate to most of them I personally don't find all the poetry relate-able, and some parts are extreme in my opinion, but overall I really like this book
Date published: 2017-10-10
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Overrated Only popular because its trendy and simple to understand. Its not the worst poetry, but its very pretentious and teen-centric. This is not the right book, if you are looking for real, emotional poetry.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Micropoetry at its best Bought this book in a time of dire sadness. The emotional journey that Rupi Kaur takes you on is one that can only be fully understood if you have gone through it/are going through it yourself. One of the best examples of truncated, short, powerful imagery. However, as a poet myself, this form of micropoetry can sometimes be misused and misconstrued into something that it's not. Rupi does a great job of staying true and genuine, but there are some pieces in this collection that are definitely stronger than others. Overall a good read but if you're looking for more classical style poetry with more visible structure to analyze, this isn't it. Going through a heartbreak though? Definitely the book for you

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful I don't usually read poetry and I picked this one out of pure curiosity. Sleek little black book with a somewhat ominous cover (to me at least), of course I'd pick it up. So on the same train of thought, I read the first page and wow. A few pages later and my eyes keep getting wider and my eyebrows higher and I just had to buy it. This little gem was my impulsive purchase of that week and I never looked back. This collection of poetry just blew me away in its intensity which is everything I expect and hope from poems the very few times I read them. And across all those pages, there are also those lovely illustrations that just make the words richer in feeling and imagery. An altogether lovely work. Granted, milk and honey will surely not be to everyone's tastes so I'd suggest to anyone who want to buy it to at least read a few pages first. Overall I absolutely loved it, and I'd recommend it (do read a few pages first though to see if it's your cup of tea).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Breathtaking LOVE this book. Such a profound perspective in minimal words. Can't wait for The Sun and Her Flowers!!
Date published: 2017-09-23
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Interesting up to a point I read this book in one sitting. Some poems did indeed stand out however it is nothing but simple prose, no true lyrical flow. I think that it may not be a book for everyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautifully written She's got a way with words
Date published: 2017-09-22
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not for me... I don't think I was the intended audience for this book, so I can't say I related much to the content. Yet, "you must never trade honesty for relatability," Rupi Kaur rightly advises. I respect her for putting together this sweet reflection on love and loss, and for promoting self-love, healing, feminism, and kindness. I'm putting this on my shelf until such a time that I desperately seek comfort and advice through literature. When that time comes, I'm sure I will glean more from these poems and will appreciate the collection much more. (I should also mention that I don't have much taste for poetry... So I'm sure I was the wrong kind of person to pick this little collection up.)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Grew on me I found the poems somewhat uneven when I first read this book. But I went back to it recently and have a greater appreciation for it--some poems are certainly better than others, but I found more than a few that really spoke to me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Insanely good I don't read much poetry, but my friend introduced this book to me when I was going through a difficult time. This book has impacted me negatively in a sense that the words Rupi used hit me very close to home, but also shed a positive light in the Self-Healing chapter. I would always pick up this book every time I needed words of encouragement #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful collection of poems I kept hearing praise for this book and wasn't sure what to expect before buying it. As I read it, I found myself on a journey through each chapter and just found it so reflective of the experiences that we have in our own lives - moments and expressions of love, sadness, pain and healing. Some parts are a bit graphic but it's reflective of how life isn't always beautiful and how we can find strength and empowerment in those hard times that shape us. Such a beautiful book by an author who has put her heart out there and leaves you in awe after reading her collection of poems. Definitely a must read and worth the $13 spent!

Poetry isn't a genre a gravitate to and have only read it when it was part of my university curriculum so I was a little hesitant to pick this book up. I've heard such good things about this book and I wasn't disappointed. Keep in mind though that this poetry does touch on difficult topics but it is beautifully written.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful! Incredible book of poetry!!! Rupi has a spectacular way of showcasing her trauma in a way that highlights both its darkness and light, at the same time. I keep this book on my bedside table and go back to it often. Simply beautiful writing!
Date published: 2017-08-14
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Explicit language and sexuality I read the first 5 or 6 writings of the first chapter, then skipped to the second, 3rd and last. The Healing chapter being my favorite. It wasn't that I didn't enjoy this book, took and hour to read. I just don't think this book, is good for everyone to read. It might be a little too graphic in the writing. The poems are nice and short, I found myself returning to the Healing chapter over and over. Great book, not recommended for teens. Probably why Wal-Mart has it on the top shelf. The cover is appealing to the younger mass, but you don't want them reading this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Trigger warning necessary I adore this poetry. It is deep, it is moving, it is beautiful. It is also dark and twisted and bleak. Heavy trigger warnings for domestic violence/ sexual violence and mental health, but may also be a cathartic read for some survivors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Too good Love it! Recieved it from a friend and have been buying copies for others because I needed to share. Be prepared to read a piece and HAVE to put the book down. It's that deep.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very personal experience I knew of, most of passing, Rupi Kaur, through instagram, to be honest. Her poems often popped into my feed here and there on various social media and I decided to pick up her book when I saw it sit on a table at a store. Her writing felt like a friend holding my hand, a recognition of the validity of my emotions and my experiences, both good and bad. I truly recommend this to any person, especially any woman or femme person out there who will absolutely relate to some of the subjects she writes baout.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gorgeous book! Minimalist poetry is becoming such a huge art form lately, and this book is a prime example of it. A lot of explicit language and imagery, especially with the artwork inside, but a nice example of minimalist writing. Lots of triggering material, beware.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I wish everyone would read this! If only more people would have read her work, the world would be a better place. She makes vulnerability strong and beautiful. Which I see that everyone is afraid to show. This book has helped me overcome a lot of hardships. PLEASE READ

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very well-done, confessional-style poetry. I was curious to see what this book was like, since it seems so rare to see poetry on the Canadian bestseller list. It's beautifully done and incredibly powerful -- I can absolutely see why it has connected with so many people. I'm personally not a fan of confessional-style poetry, so this wasn't really the book for me. But it does what it does very well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING It's not so much poetry as it is a collection of thoughts, anecdotes, and imagery that can be described as poetic. BUT WOW do they really speak to you. Especially as a woman I found this book to be so uplfiting and inspiring. A great read! If I could go back and buy the hardcover version I would. Definitely worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Provocative but honest A beautiful collection of poetry and prose. Kaur tells the story as it is and hides nothing. It can be explicit and quite graphic at times, but all towards creating the most honest depiction of her story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing poetry only the depths of your mind can touch The bind up, Milk and Honey, is one of the best modern poetry novels I have ever read. It looks at different scopes of the inner self, society, and political issues. It discusses feminism in a different perspective than what we see now a days. It is truly a phonemail addition to anyone who adores poetry - for those who say its lame, doesn't make sense, are only saying it because it doesn't touch them in a poetic way. Thats the thing about poems, you don't always understand and thats usually because you cannot relate.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Powerful and honest poems I had seen Rupi Kaur's poems posted on Facebook and finally went out to get my own copy. Her poems are raw and honest, full of pain but also of love and hope. I enjoyed reading the whole thing straight through and will go back to read individual poems over time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I went to the Brampton Rose Theater to watch her perform "Milk and Honey" live (and some preview of her new edition "The Sun and Her Flowers", and it was honestly so emotional hearing it spoken to by her. This book gives representation to women of colour that have never had much popularity in the art world, especially in modern North American Poetry, and it gives verse after verse of passion and courage and vulnerability that is refreshing to read. Some parts are a bit graphic, but contribute to the overall gratification that reading this book has given me.
