about

A New York Times Bestseller -- In an unforgettable novel that mixes spine-tingling fiction with haunting photography, a horrific tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob on a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned rooms, it becomes clear that Miss Peregrine's children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. And somehow -- they may still be alive.
Ransom Riggs is a writer and filmmaker. He attended the Pine View School for the Gifted in Florida. He studied English literature at Kenyon College and studied film at the University of Southern California. His work on short films for the Internet and blogging for Mental Floss magazine got him a job writing The Sherlock Holmes Handbook...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Series is better! The first was a little bit slow but the series got much better as it went!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not bad I enjoyed the concept of the story but felt like it lacked a little bit in the delivery. As the writer progresses it gets better. Book 2 and 3 are much better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from unexpectedly awesome i was interested in the series because i saw the movie first and the first book was a birthday gift from a dear friend. i mean who doesn't love books as a gift, this one was a complete surprise even more so because i couldn't believe how amazing the story is. it only took me four days to read because i didn't want to put it down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected! This type of story is not my typical read, but thought I'd give it a try and it exceeded my expectations. I will now be purchasing the next two books!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Interesting I loved the incorporation of photos into the storyline, made the book even more vivid than it already is.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great! Read this even before watching the movie (I'm just one of those who need to read the book before seeing the movie). Very interesting that I had to finish the book the day that I got it. I read it again after a few days just to soak in the details I missed when I did the marathon reading.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great I read this in high school and really enjoyed it. A good book for young adults. A truly unique story and the photos throughout the book really add to the experience.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great beginning to a great trilogy. My mom recommended this to me about a year before I read the book. I decided to read the book after seeing the trailer for the movie. Although reading this book isn't necessary for watching the movie since there were so many changes. I'm glad I read the book before since then I knew how great it really was because if I just watched the movie I wouldn't want to read the books.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hauntingly Beautiful The story is so unique and 'peculiar' in its own way.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love the character details This book is amazing in terms of details. When I first started reading it, it took a bit of time to get into it BUT once I did, it was so hard to put down. I love the amount of description this author put into for each character.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from One of my most interesting reads to date Where do I even begin with this book? It's simply brilliant on every level. the characters and their relationships are among the most interesting and well developed I've had the pleasure to read about in a while, the format is unique and interesting, weaving together antique photographs with a story unlike any other. The only fault I can think of when it comes to this book is that, at times, the pacing is a bit thrown off by the inclusion of scenes existing solely to describe the photos that are shown to us, at most, a page later. The thrilling action in the later portions is more than enough to balance things out though.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from good I really enjoyed reading this book when I first picked it up, but I don't think it is somethin I would ever re-read. I liked the ending but don't really feel like I need to pick up the next one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from i really liked it let me start by saying that I HATE first person books, with passion. i was ready to read these ones, though. i loved the fact that the movie was about the same; the only thing they really changes was emma and olive's powers and that was in order to be able to do the underwater scene. the book ends before the movie does, but i'm pretty sure that happened because burton realized there were no money in the second and third installments.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Loved This! I got it for my birthday right before the movie came out. One of the best books i have ever read!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Meh Bought it because it was on sale, but I could not bring myself to read past a few pages. Maybe one day I'll finish it, but not anytime soon.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderfully Weird Fascinating! The story was compelling and the characters were relatable (albeit strange). While I understand the reason behind the photographs (and they certainly heightened the level of creepy realness this book held) I felt the story was forced to include them rather than organically entwining them. I was constantly pulled from the narrative and though this didn't lessen my love of the story it did affect my experience - plus added to some really weird dream sequences I wasn't too fond of! Still, a wonderful book with a capturing plot that leaves you guessing-hard to put down!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great story for kids and adults alike! Maybe I am young at heart but my favourite books are from the teen section. This series both my husband and I and our 3 teens all love. We waited in anticipation for the 2nd and third books to be released. The film was a little scary for my 10 year old but he loved the book being read to him.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Original! Read this book when it first came out and I completely loved it. very original story with pictures to come along with the story that the author was telling!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Invigorating Story! A friend gave me the book to read and I was a little weary at first because I haven't read a book with pictures in it since I was little. But it works so well with the story and I know there were a few parts that completely freaked me out because of the pictures! It is such an original idea and I love how Ransom Riggs creates a story around the photos, not the other way around. I could hardly put the book down and finished it in like two or three days. I'm very excited to see what's in store for the rest of the trilogy!
Date published: 2017-08-11
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastically Spooky The story starts off slowly, as we are introduced to a few key characters, but picks up quickly as you move through the pages. I love how the story fits so well with the accompanying spooky pictures. The book is better than the film adaption. I have yet to read the rest of the series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Oh my gosh this book... This book is phenomenal. I love the writing style and the plot. The concept is so interesting. The pictures are an added bonus to the story. It is just a really unique reading experience and all the peculiars have a place in my hear.
Date published: 2017-08-06
Rated 4 out of 5 by from started off slow - then I got hooked! I won't lie this book started of slow. It was until maybe the sixth chapter that I began to whiz through it. Like many books the beginning can be sort of anti-climactic but then they quickly turn into mind-boggling pieces of literature, that was my experience with this first installment of Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children. Once I got to the sixth chapter I couldn't put it down the suspenseful events and slow burning romance between Emma and Jacob combined make this novel a definite page turner. Ransom Riggs' incredible writing style engages the reader and is (in my opinion) a piece of high quality literature.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Cool The story is great, the incorporation of the pictures is very well done, and the characters are great! I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not, but I was hooked!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So fun and creative! I wan't entirely sure what to expect from this book. But I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. I loved how the action unfolded. This book has a wonderful message of acceptance that I believe all children and young adults could benefit from. I watched the film shortly after finishing the book, and while visually it was appealing, the film went beyond the book and, in my opinion, was a total mess from that point until the end. If you have seen the movie but did not love it, do yourself a favor and read the book! You will not regret it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I love the serie I became aware of the books after viewing the movie and with the time my interest grew and I finally decided to read them. Of course the books are not 100% matching the scenario of the movie but mostly in a better way. Overall I have not been disappointed. Specially in hard cover, the books are really valuable. Not only the story is captivating but as well the added pictures, which are illustrating the book. I really do not regret the invest I made into the trilogy box.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Trailers Sell I saw the trailer for this film and decided I needed to read the book first as the film looked super intriging, and the book is ALWAYS better than the film due to details not making it in and what not. I started to read the book, and it was a bit of a slow start, but once it got going, it was going! I am now halfway through the second book and still enjoying the series. The detail in the book is great, and as much as I'm not used to reading books with pictures, it really helps to bring the story to life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Book Was Amazing My relationship with this book, this series actually, is simple. I saw the first one (this one) on a shelf, I fell in love with the cover. Subtly suggested it to my friend to get me for my birthday, read it, and couldn't put it down! I've read the entire series at this point, and am seriously contemplating rereading it. The photos, the plot, the characters... I could go on. 10/10 would recommend!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hooked I bought this book as I saw the trailer for the movie, and said I HAVE to read it. Well I did, and am now finished the last book. The first book is a bit slow, but still very in depth with great detail. This is a great start to the series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great, interesting read! I bought this book due to the cover, and found it to be wonderfully excellent. The included images in particular were fantastic and definitely can be defined as 'a picture is worth a thousand words.'

Date published: 2017-07-18
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Could have been better This book definitely had an interesting concept, but I felt as if it introduced too many fantastical aspects that didn't even need to be a part of the story. There was little explanation of how and why these things existed, and I felt as though the author based the story around the old photographs he had, no matter if the plot made sense or not. This had potential to be a Harry Potter -esque story, but it just didn't grab me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No thank you Sure it was intriguing to start with and while it held my interest for most of the way through, it got really dumb maybe 2/3 of the way in. I just hated it, it wasn't what I was expecting but in a bad way
Date published: 2017-07-13
Rated 4 out of 5 by from good book The book its self was good and I loved the writing style. The only "bad" thing I have to say about it is that even though I read this book 6 months ago I have had no urge to pick up the next one. I feel like even though the book was good it did not end on enought of a memorable cliff hanger for me to really want to continue to read the series. I did really enjoy the story and the book though.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Had a lot of potential... From the synopsis this sounds really interesting, right? WRONG. Well, in my opinion. I didn’t enjoy this book very much. So many people have been reading this and raving about it over the years that I was really hoping to be able to rave about it with them. I also had seen the movie when it cam out and I adored it, so I was expecting to love the book too. Let me start with what I did enjoy because yay for positivity. I really thought that the photos were a great addition to the story. They went along with the text and I found it so cool to be given a visual about what the characters were talking about. The photos gave more depth to the story which was much appreciated. I thought that this book was going to be scary. It was a bit creepy and gross at times but not as I had expected. If you’re going into this book expecting to get scared, you might be a bit let down. I was actually grateful for this fact since I’m not a huge fan of scary stuff. Now… onto what I didn’t enjoy. Don’t get me wrong, I love the concept of this book (which I initially gathered from the synopsis, reviews, and the movie) and it’s intriguing. I just felt that the way the concept was carried out was done poorly. I thought the plot dragged out and things were repetitive, I was bored throughout (pretty much) the whole book. I liked the first 40 or so pages which displayed out main character, Jacob, and his grandpa’s (Abe) relationship. Their connection was just so great to read about and Abe’s stories had me interested in reading more. Then the rest of the book came along and I felt myself trudging through it.Nothing super interesting happened until the last 40 pages where the plot picked up a bit in order to lead into the next book. I am a very character-driven reader. If the characters in a book are good, I can usually look past a boring plot. As you might have already guessed from that fact, I disliked the characters in this book. Jacob is a spoiled, ungrateful, and whiny kid (oops, I mean teenager). I felt like he was very immature and the only time I liked him was when he was with his grandfather. That was only because his grandpa could “counteract” how annoying Jacob was. I feel neutral on Miss Peregrine an the peculiar children. Many of then lacked depth and weren’t as interesting as I’d hoped. I’m looking forward to reading the next book to see if that changes. I also didn’t like the romance (if it can even be called that) in this book. I felt it to be really forced and awkward. From what I got from reading this first book, I feel like this trilogy could have been condensed into a dulology. I’m hoping that the somewhat intriguing ending of this book leads to a more action-packed and interesting rest of the trilogy. I’ve seen so many positive reviews for this book, so I’d still recommend that you give it a try for yourself! From my blog: https://plentifulpages.wordpress.com/2017/05/31/unpopular-opinion-alert-miss-peregrines-home-for-peculiar-children-by-ransom-riggs-spoiler-free-book-review/

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of a Kind. Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs is truly one of a kind. The book it's self can be lack luster in a few areas but the sheer creativity and thought in the novel makes up for it. The novel draws ideas from history and modern novels and culture to cultivate a truly outstanding and elaborate book series that you can't forget.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great read Love this book. Was not expecting to enjoy it, but it was eerie and haunting and I couldn't put it down. The pictures lend to the intrigue and eeriness. Interesting collision of time periods and worlds.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Addicting! I've been recommended Miss P for quite some time and remember discovering it in 2014. Glad to have the box set because I can actually understand the hype for this one! The pictures are such a great complement to the story (along with your imagination), and I feel as though this was a good startup in the world the rest of the books take place. Also interesting is that I felt as though there was some slight WWII historical element which also enhanced my interest. Indeed a great fantasy read for anyone, and perhaps should also watch the movie trailer again (with more depth) to consider watching the adaptation. Also, I felt Jacob throughout the story. His parents are the type of people I wish I could have straightened up, and especially that counsellor. You'll see what I mean if you read it!!
Date published: 2017-04-28
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Breathtaking story and images coalesce to create a modern fantasy classic.
Date published: 2017-04-28
Rated 4 out of 5 by from I liked this book I got this book as a birthday gift at a young age, although I didn't read the book until last year. (I flipped through and at 12 the pictures of creepy twins and all the peculiar children really freaked me out.) However I ended up really liking it, once I got past the images. I read it because I heard the movie was coming out, and i definitely like it more. However it does take about half the book for the real action or at least for the peculiar children to be introduced.
Date published: 2017-04-22
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This was amazing! This story was slow to get started. Most of the action happened in the last quarter of the book, so it wasn't evenly dispersed. I didn't mind that because the story was interesting and the photos made the story seem very real. The characters were very peculiar and likable. I loved this book and I can't wait to read the sequel!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Insane I refuse to watch the movie. The novel has it all and is definitely worth reading! Drained a bit of my energy due to the way it progresses, but is still honestly notable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful The vintage pictures were unique, and I love what they added to the book. They helped draw me into the story and the children's lives. Worth mentioning: If you hated the movie and are not sure about the book, have no fear! The movie was so far off from the book, and nobody I know who read the book enjoyed the movie. Would definitely recommend reading the book!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really Enjoying This Series I'm really been enjoying these books; just started them after Christmas. one note I will make is they have been promoted a bit like young adult books and there is some adult content and language.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Really eerie I liked this series, it was really eerie and the pictures add a lot to the story. I gave this three because I found the first book a bit slow but I really enjoyed the series as a whole.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ok #plumreview - This book was a quick read. It was enjoyable, but did not leave me wishing for more. I feel like the world the story is set in was very interesting, but that something was missing. It could be that the story was not as exciting as I had hoped, or that the character development wasn't as detailed as I like, but all in all it was still a good read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great read This is one of the most unique, fun and, yes, 'peculiar' books I've ever read. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay I bought this book based on the high reviews, but went into it not really knowing what was going to happen. Well, I can easily say this is the most peculiar book I have ever read. I ripped through the first half easily; it was interesting and well-paced. However, just as other reviewers have said, it sort of petered out and became much less interesting, and much more predictable, as the story progressed through the last half. The children suddenly became impulsive and seemed to bumble about, just getting lucky in the end. Though I will read it, I'm not in a hurry to head into the next book; I feel like I need to take a break and switch to something more interesting. I will keep the book in my library though because, if nothing else, the pictures would make interesting conversation.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting Read This was a good book. I definitely enjoyed it, but did find it to be a bit slow at times. I guess it is geared towards teens and younger readers, so that was to be expected. Good read though.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Easy Read I enjoyed this book. I knew going into it that it was more for teens or young readers so therefore I didn't expect too much from the storyline. I still enjoyed the book, it was entertaining and the use of the photos to build the characters and story was pretty neat.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Story It was a good story, but it just fell flat for me. I actually (I know!!) liked the movie better. Also, I got this as an ebook. The writing was too small to read on a smartphone screen when it came to hand-written letters.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but ... ** spoiler alert ** It was good ... but not great. I think I expected a lot more going in because of everything my mom told me and how everyone goes on about the book and tone but it was just kind of okay. I mean the use of the history and photos was incredible and the world built up but I wasn't overly fond of the characters of their motivations. Miss Peregrine wasn't very sympathetic and the girl (whose name I can't remember) pinning after a man and then falling in love with his grandson. That doesn't sit right with me. Books or movies where love interests are almost family because their loved ones almost got together or that just comes off as creepy to me. It also could have been so original but instead it fell into the trap of YA. The love story that gets ahead of itself, the main boy who never fit in in his regular life and then is the one who can save everyone else. I will probably read the other ones to see how they go but I won't rush to it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely loved this book I was kind of weary off this book series at first but I ended up loving the story and the characters. The writing style was so amazing and I just hope that he continues to write more books. Cant wait to read the next two books in this series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting! I love Ransom Riggs' sense of humour in the writing and the story; and the funny choice of words and mental commentary from Jacob was entertaining as well. The kids are adorably.. peculiar. I think Olive and Emma and Millard are my favourites. The story was original and interesting and promising. I did have a bit of a hard time getting into the story at first and I slightly lost interest at some parts but overall I would say this was a very good book and I liked how the ending opened things up for the second book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! I have to say it took me quite some time before I started to get into reading this book more seriously. Three times I had picked it up, read the first two chapters before putting it aside for a few months. When I heard the movie was coming out, I decided to pick it up for the fourth time and really try to read past the first chapters. I'm so happy I gave this book another the chance because I loved it! The story is amazing and s different from what I thought it was going to be. And I'm really loving the photographs in this book! I can't wait to start reading Hollow City!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Photography is an amazing addition The story itself is compelling enough but follows a pretty typical YA hero story. The way the photographs were integrated and obviously inspiring the story was so interesting. It was like a found poem but a whole novel and I loved that aspect

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great I'm not usually a fan of first person novels, but I really enjoyed the writing style of this one. It flowed very well and created a world that I could picture. I found it to be much better than the movie.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Peculiar Indeed I started reading this knowing a movie was coming out. I finished it before the film and found it quite amusing. I read the whole thing quite quickly because I didn't want to put it down. It wasn't what I thought it would be and turned out much better than my original expectations. It's another one of those it's better than the movie.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Whimsical, Funny, Dark and Creepy The story started off a little slow but once it started to pick up, I had a hard time putting it down. I really enjoyed how the world was so incredibly unique. It did have its creepy moments but all in all, it was a really cool, supernatural read. It kind of reminded me of a darker take on The X-Men but instead of those with abilities being called mutants, they’re known as peculiar.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from No regrets, but no raves either. I didn't like this book as much as I expected to. It read like a cross between Catcher in the Rye and Harry Potter. I found myself beginning to enjoy it more in the final few chapters, and then it was over. Perhaps this author just takes a while to warm up, and perhaps the extensive background story will be useful as the series continues. I really enjoyed the author's use of language, but I don't know if I am attached to the characters enough to continue reading the series - I feel like I expected it to be darker, and in the end, it read more like a children's story.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved this! I was very excited when I bought this book, I got the one with the movie tie in and it did not disappoint although when I saw the movie some of the characters were different from the book which made it some what hard to follow. Other than that this book was amazing and I could not put it down!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children, #1) Review "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" is an amazing piece of magical reality, however, and I don't think you will end up being disappointed in reading it. One unusual thing about this book is the use of pictures throughout - something that isn't seen much in fiction anymore. These pictures document some of the people in the book. I highly recommend it and hope you will take my advice and buy this book - the sooner the better!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! I just watched the movie last week and I was a little disappointed. This book is so good and descriptive and I did not think that the movie did it justice. It was easily one of my favourite fantasy books and is geared towards all ages.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting and Enticing I read this because it was one of the choices for our class's mystery unit, and I must say that it was worth it. Granted, I had to turn over the book whenever I put it down since the cover did creep me out, but the pictures are still a favourite part.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from interesting I read this about two years (?) ago. I bought this book for my friend and after hearing her rave about it, I decided to buy a copy for myself. I liked it well enough but apart from my need to finish a series I started, I really have no other desire of finishing this series. Or maybe I just need to reread it? I don't know. It's not a bad book but it's probably not for me :/

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Slow Start, Good Read I found this book a little bit daunting to dive into, but persevered. Once I got a little deeper into the storyline it seemed to bloom with excitement. Overall it is aimed to a younger crowd, with the hint of romance, but a focus on adventure!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Darkly Fascinating Adventure! "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" a darkly chilling fantasy begins when sixteen year old Jacob Portman's grandfather who for years spun wondrous and strange tales of orphans with unusual powers living on a remote Welsh island dies suddenly under bizarre circumstances. Depressed at the loss he encourages his father to take him to Cairnholm Island where Jacob discovers a dilapidated old house in a bog and a loop in time that repeats the same day in the 1940's over and over. In an unforgettable and mesmerizing fictional tale filled with old photographs that breathe life into this bizarre world, Jacob discovers not only the truth about the strange children living in the house, but the monsters that keep them restricted to the island. A well-developed plot with twists that keep you enthralled from beginning to the end, Jacob quickly learns that his grandfather's stories are real The story builds intensity and suspense slowly from Jacob's discovery of an empty house in the bog, to the hot-tempered girl in a white dress who holds a knife to his throat and eventually to the truth behind the monsters that keep the children confined to a loop in the past, never aging and growing bored and restless as time passes. Told in a first person narrative the plot is convincing with its blend of the present and a past that gives the allusion of WW11 with planes overhead and a falling bomb. Quickly and smoothly the plot moves to a confrontation near the end that opens the door to a sequel. With a rich mother and easily distracted father Jacob Portman is considered smart but aloof at school; his only friend Ricky who's more brawn than brains but keeps all the bullies at bay. Growing up with the love and incredible stories of his grandfather, as Jacobr gets older he begins to doubt their truth, only to feel guilty when his grandfather is killed by a monster only he can see. Headstrong and stubborn, learning all he can about Miss Peregrine a shapeshifter and her amazing charges, he lies to his father about his whereabouts and his new friends until he makes a decision that will change his life. Jacob like all the children enrich this story with their unique powers and multi-faceted personalities infusing the unfolding events with tension, realism, and excitement. I thoroughly enjoyed the unique setting, characters and imaginative plot of "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" and can't wait to read the next book in the trilogy.
