The second edition of Modern Infectious Disease Epidemiology, in line with changing health concerns, is a thorough revision of the first. Written from an infectious disease perspective throughout, the book aims to teach epidemiology to those with a background in this field. It seeks to fill the gap between the standard textbooks of epidemiology, which rarely approach the subject from an infectious disease perspective, and standard books on infection surveillance and control, which tend to slant more towards microbiology and practical measures than towards analytical epidemiology.

Divided into two parts, the first covers the tools of epidemiology much like other textbooks, but always from an infectious disease perspective. The second covers the role of contact pattern from an assessment angle, and uses the tools learnt to illustrate the study of fundamental infectious disease concepts, such has infectivity, incubation periods, seroepidemiology and immunity.

This detailed theoretical epidemiology textbook is clearly set out, with an expanded chapter on practical statistical methods, and a new chapter on descriptive epidemiology. Key features include new clinical examples and infectious disease problems of recent interest, such as tuberculosis and vCJD. All students of epidemiology, infectious disease medicine, and microbiology will find this an invaluable guide.

Editorial Reviews

It is very readable and clearly and genially takes the reader through the basics of infectious diseases and epidemiology before bringing the two themes together. I have learned a lot from reading this clear exposition. This book was a delight to review. It is clearly written and has a very logical way of explaining the subject.Judges at the 2002 BMA Medical Book Competition Aw This book is undoubtedly authoritative and detailed, and as such seems appropriate for those with an academic interest in communicable disease epidemiology, or a need to understand this field in great depthJournal of Public Health Medicine Giesecke has to a great degree brought successfully together the basic tools of statistics and methodology and their application in understanding the epidemiology of infectious diseaseMicrobiology Europe There is a clarity and brevity when discussing necessary mathematical concepts so that a quick clear grasp of the issues can be gained. This is a lucid, thoroughly readable book which may be read from cover to cover of dipped into and referred to again.Journal of Epidemiology A very readable book that leaves you inspired and confident to tackle some of those gnawing questions without feeling the need to call up 'the epidemiologists'.By his enthusiasm, I believe Professor Giesecke enjoyed writing this book and he has done us a service in doing so.Tropical Doctor This is the most authoratative and clearly written book on infectious disease epidemiology - the first edition was was outstanding - I am sure the second edition is even better. I strongly recommend it to my students and colleagues.Dr Anjum Memon, Public Health Primary Care, Univer
