about

"Mooncakes is spellbinding. It had everything I love in a story-magic that felt inventive, characters that became my friends, and a romance that felt truly authentic. It was one of those books that I was sad to see end. Luckily, I can always reread." -Tillie Walden, creator of Spinning and On a Sunbeam

"Mooncakes transported me to a gorgeous magical realm that I never want to leave, and introduced me to lovable characters who stuck with me long after I finished reading. This graphic novel is the joyful fantasy romance we all need right now, and it might just restore your faith in magic." -Charlie Jane Anders, author of All the Birds in the Sky

"Mooncakes is heartwarming, playful and absolutely magical! A story about love and family, with a kind and powerful core that radiates through the vibrant cast of characters."  -Katie O'Neill, author of The Tea Dragon Society and Princess Princess Ever After

A story of love and demons, family and witchcraft.

Nova Huang knows more about magic than your average teen witch. She works at her grandmothers' bookshop, where she helps them loan out spell books and investigate any supernatural occurrences in their New England town.

One fateful night, she follows reports of a white wolf into the woods, and she comes across the unexpected: her childhood crush, Tam Lang, battling a horse demon in the woods. As a werewolf, Tam has been wandering from place to place for years, unable to call any town home.

Pursued by dark forces eager to claim the magic of wolves and out of options, Tam turns to Nova for help. Their latent feelings are rekindled against the backdrop of witchcraft, untested magic, occult rituals, and family ties both new and old in this enchanting tale of self-discovery.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Charming, delightful, and off the charts adorable! Mooncakes is charming, delightful, and off the charts adorable! With a diverse cast of characters and a fun, exciting story I was hooked in the first few pages. Tam is a non-binary werewolf, while Nova is a queer witch who wears hearing aids and their love story is super sweet. I appreciated the emphasis on family, friendship and supporting each other no matter what. Nova’s lesbian grandmothers are quite possibly my favourite characters in this book. They are kind, clever, and completely bad ass! I especially loved the forest full of magical creatures that are just too cute but fully willing to fight for their friends. Several frames of them heading into battle made me laugh out loud! I was a little worried for them but nothing traumatic occurs to the cute spirit creatures, or anyone else really. Despite the need to fight the monster and the evil cult who wants to release it the story is mostly non-violent. Even the solution to the monster in the woods is resolved in a very satisfying, peaceable way. This was a straight-up happy, feel good story and I think the door was left open for a sequel. I’m hoping this is in the works because I don’t want to be done with these charming characters and their magical world. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolute Perfection! Everything about this graphic novel is absolutely perfect. The illustrations were delectable, the characters were real and relatable, and the story was charmingly adorable. Seriously, this is one of those graphic novels that you will read in one sitting and be left with a feeling of contentment (while also wishing for more at the same time). This graphic novel excelled at representation. The main characters of this story include a non-binary character and even introduced the topic of their identification along with a character that has a hearing disability and wears hearing aids. More than that the story also includes more LGBTQ characters along with characters that have different body types straying from the generic "standard" that can be often drawn in graphic novels. This was such a cute story that reads perfectly as a standalone but I cannot help but wish for more from these characters in a future novel. I would love to read another instalment based on the adventures that were introduced at the end of this novel. ***Thank you to the publisher for supplying me with a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review***
