about

You've never read a fantasy novel like this one! The deep well of Japanese myth merges with the Western fantasy tradition for a novel that's as rich in place and culture as it is hard to put down. Balsa was a wanderer and warrior for hire. Then she rescued a boy flung into a raging river -- and at that moment, her destiny changed. Now Balsa must protect the boy -- the Prince Chagum -- on his quest to deliver the great egg of the water spirit to its source in the sea. As they travel across the land of Yogo and discover the truth about the spirit, they find themselves hunted by two deadly enemies: the egg-eating monster Rarunga . . . and the prince's own father.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic debut It's rare that I finish a book and am breathless from the adventure of it, but with Moribito, I was definately breathless. This book is amazing! A mix of fantasy and martial arts, with a smattering of political intrigue, there is nothing that leaves me wanting. Balsa is a strong, independant woman, but she isn't invincible, and she isn't inhuman, either. Chagum, with his shaky start, makes up for it admirably. Together, the two of them fend of forces that affect the very nature of their lands. When I heard that there were ten books in the series, I was elated. I can't wait until the next one. I'm so glad that Scholastic published this series. What a wonderful first novel!
