about

Based on the wildly popular Instagram account @CrazyJewishMom, Kate Siegel's essay collection about life with the woman who redefined the term "helicopter mom."

There is nothing more wonderful than a mother’s love. There is also nothing more annoying. Who else can proudly insist that you’re perfect while simultaneously making you question every career, fashion, and relationship decision you have ever made?

No one understands the delicate mother-daughter dynamic better than Kate Siegel—her own mother drove her so crazy that she decided to broadcast their hilarious conversations on Instagram. Soon, hundreds of thousands of people were following their daily text exchanges, eager to see what outrageous thing Kate’s mom would do next. Now, in Mother, Can You NOT?, Kate pays tribute to the woman who invented the concept of drone parenting.

From embarrassing moments (like crashing Kate's gynecological exams) to outrageous stories (like the time she made Kate steal a cat from the pound) to hilarious celebrations (including but not limited to parties for Kate's menstrual cycles), Mother, Can you NOT? lovingly lampoons the lengths to which our mothers will go to better our lives (even if it feels like they’re ruining them in the process).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from CrazyJewishMom did not disappoint! As expected, it was a hilarious read. First knew of them through Instagram, but the book provided a lot more detail and stories, which Instagram snippets couldn't have provided. Lent the book to my friend who is also a fan and now even her mom is reading it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hilarious! Bought this book as a birthday present to myself and so worth it! It is hilarious and shocking and shows a mother/daugher relationship completely different than anything I've ever seen! I would recommend this book to everyone. Best book I've read all year!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mother, Can You Not? is the perfect book to gift a friend, share with a colleague or just treat yourself to. I've been following crazyjewishmom on Instagram for a while now and it always makes me smile. I love both Kate's mortified reaction to her mom's comments and her mom's awesome off the cuff remarks. So when I saw (on Instagram) that a book was coming out, I put it on my wishlist. And Mother, Can You Not? did not disappoint. It was hilarious. I read this book as a collection of quirky, hilarious stories that never failed to make me grin. For a while it was my companion in the bubble bath. Soon I found myself reading aloud some of the chapters to my own daughter and laughing with her. I even started recounting some of the stories to my girlfriends (who immediately reacted by saying, "Wait, who did this?"). Not only does she have a great sense of humour, Kate Siegel is a gifted writer. Her style is open and honest. I felt like I was listening to one of my girlfriends tell me about her quirky mom. And, of course, I finished the book thinking that these are MY kind of people. But more than that I very much enjoyed Kate's style as a writer. She has the kind of voice that draws the reader in (think Meg Cabot). I hope to see much more from her! Mother, Can You Not? is the perfect book to gift a friend, share with a colleague or just treat yourself to. Highly recommend it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thoroughly enjoyable! I bought this book hoping for nothing more than a collection of the hilarious screen shots the author posts on her Crazy Jewish Mom instagram account. I enjoy them so much, but scrolling through them for hours on end is going to give me carpal tunnel, so I thought a book of them would be a healthy alternative for my poor cramped hand. What I got was so much more than I had dreamed. Back story! Shenanigans! The occasional criminal escapade! The author, while a wee bit rambling at times, certainly knows how to paint a picture. And oh! What pictures she has to paint! Behind the stories themselves, though, is evidence of the love, respect and support she and her mother share. "Mother, Can You Not?' will make a perfect gift for mothers and daughters everywhere, not to mention sons-in-law (and potential sons-in-law) who struggle to understand the deep bond between moms and their not-so-little-but-always-my-baby girls. I'm still going to hope for that collection of screen shots, though. I'd buy the crap out of that, too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I laughed and I cried (because I was laughing so hard) I've been following @crazyjewishmom for ages and it never fails to brighten my day. I had high expectations for the book, and Kate far surpassed them. Kate and Kim get up to some crazy antics, but Kate's writing is what makes them worth reading. I read this book in a Starbucks and I literally laughed so hard I cried. Even if you haven't been following @crazyjewishmom on instagram (you really should, it's hilarious), I feel that you'll love this book. This book is the perfect mix of funny advice, feminism, and gut busting laughter. Ultimately, it left me inspired to go after what I want in life, which is much more than I expected. I'm really excited to see what Kate comes up with next (Maybe TV??).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect read to share with friends! I'm a big fan of Kate's Instagram feed, @crazyjewishmother often makes my day and honestly, the book is even better. The comedic delivery is perfect, each essay is well written and engaging. I came out of it feeling like I knew these women and I truly wish I did just to be a part of their antics. A beautiful balance of feminism, family and comedy, Kate and her mother are an inspiration that I think a lot of women would benefit from reading and I can't wait for more of my friends to pick it up so we can share in the experience together. It's hard to believe this is her first foray into the published world and I'm excited to see what she comes out with next.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Funny and Sweet I follow @crazyjewishmom on Instagram and I've been looking forward to reading her book and it doesn't disappoint. Hilarious stories of this drone mom's antics that you can tell all of her actions come from a place of love. I can't wait for more!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Crazy good! Having followed @crazyjewishmom on Instagram I though I would give this book a read. To be honest I didn't have very high expectations given that this is the first novel by this author. I received it on a Wednesday and finished it the same day. I found it to be well written and quite hilarious in parts. As a mom of a twenty something daughter I could totally relate to many of the situations that the author wrote about. It would make a great gift for any mom or daughter. Just keep in mind some of the language may offend some (I was not offended at all!) I cannot wait till the next book. Hopefully it will be called "Grandmother can you not".
