Darkly off-kilter stories about the moving parts to being human.

A blind date blooms in a grocery store parking lot. Lake Erie forms the backdrop to a botched assisted suicide. A neurotic, dog-loving caretaker writes a complaint letter after an unfortunate leg-waxing incident. While his uncle lies in a coma, a young man befriends a dead homeless guy. A coming-of-age road trip leads to encounters with a gang of costumed lesbian arm wrestlers and a man with a hoof. A plane crash on the BC coast brings an artist and a bootlegger together in a dire situation. These flawed, often broken characters seek meaning, acceptance, and closure under extraordinary circumstances ... though not necessarily in that order.

Equal parts insightful and heartbreaking, Moving Parts is a provocative debut collection of deeply imagined, darkly funny stories. Through language-driven narratives that are wry, moving, and off-kilter, Pesch bravely holds up a mirror to uneasy issues and troubled relationships. We are revealed in her characters: raw and inappropriate, loving and confrontational, struggling to connect.

Moving Parts is an evocative and playful story collection that pulls back the curtain on what it means to be truly human.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous Read I truly wished there were more stories. Each one was so unique in itself, yet combined it was one of the best books I've ever read. First book? Wow, I can't wait for more. Character driven, varied stories, exciting twists and turns, and enough strangeness to make one wonder how much is based in truth, because everyone knows truth is often stranger than fiction. Great work Ms. Pesch. I look forward to more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compelling Collection This is a collection to be savoured. Lana Pesch's stories are strikingly au courant. The settings are convincing, the language is vivid and the characters have true psychological depth. Sit back with this book by a wood stove, a lonely beach or even a bustling coffee shop. And enjoy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sparkling debut If this is the first collection of short stories from a new writer, we are witnessing the birth of an accomplished storyteller right out of the blocks. Lana's varied characters, pacing, and stories are from an experienced and learned point of view, with a tad of wackiness thrown in. As is the death flaw of every great short story: I want the story to continue. Every story in 'Moving Parts' pulls you so far in that you are startled and annoyed and maybe mad when it ends. Each one is a novel in itself. This collection is a sparkling debut.

[Lana Pesch] knows how to pick the right word and to carry emotional weight with the perfect simile. She lets her words gradually unfurl her characters. ―Herizons - Herizons
