Then the lone driver backs up, charges again, and speeds off, leaving eight dead and more wounded. The case goes unsolved and ex-cop Bill Hodges is out of hope when he gets a letter from a man who loved the feel of death under the Mercedes’s wheels…

Brady Hartsfield wants that rush again, but this time he’s going big, with an attack that would take down thousands—unless Hodges and two new unusual allies he picks up along the way can throw a wrench in Hartsfield’s diabolical plans. Stephen King takes off on a “nerve-shredding, pulse-pounding race against time” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram) with this acclaimed #1 bestselling thriller.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Read It was a good read,,some what lacking what king is all about,,not too much of his uncanny sense of horror in this novel,,,alittle bit of his demented side,,still worth the read

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just okay I read this book expecting a different kind of King. With this said, it was an enjoyable read but I thought the plot lacked originality and was rather predictable. Will probably read Finders Keepers as I liked the characters.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent Not the best stephen king book but still worth a read. Similair to other recent King books, less of a horror feel, more of a crime novel

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first SK novel Tbis was an entertaining read. Im not a huge fan of horror, so i was delighted to see that this was more a crime drama.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not a typical Stephen King If your expecting a typical Stephen King this book will disappoint. Nothing that goes bump in the night here. Instead a rather predictable psychopathic murder thriller and I use the word thriller generously. Just OK.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! Thanks to Toronto Sun columnist Liz Braun's story about Stephen King, and her review of Finders Keepers, I read Mr. Mercedes the first of his detective trilogy. Looking forward to Finders Keepers, after I finish Linwood Barclay's latest.

I read that too.... and then I tried other authors other genres. I reconnected with him with 11/22/63 which was different enough but I liked it anyways! I saw the book cover for Finder's keeper and I was intrigued... got on my kobo and saw it was the second book in the trilogy I decided to try it and OH was I surprised from the very first line I was hooked.... now i`m half way there and I can`t wait for FINDER'S KEEPER. that can give you an idea! he never dissapoints :) great author

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of King's Best! Stephen King gets better with age with no sign of slowing down the creative writing energy that he has foisted upon us over five decades. The Maine man can write anything and transform it into something unique and special. Mr. Mercedes is King's suspense crime noir novel that has fascinating characters, a unique villain and plot-turns like you have never seen. I just loved it and cannot wait to read the sequel Finders Keepers'.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from "Meet Brady, Mr. Mercedes" King is synonymous with horror, although his more recent works don't all live up to that title. Take, if you will, 11-22-63, which was a story about travelling back in time to prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The plot sounds mediocre at face value but, with the stellar storytelling skills and charisma of Stephen King, he has woven a compelling tale that not only leaves the reader feeling excited, but instils a feeling of care and sympathy towards JFK. Being someone who opposes historical fiction as a general rule, 11-22-63 delivered a stellar tale that I was not expecting and left me caring deeply about what happened on November 22, 1963. Take also, for example, his story Joyland, the one about the young guy who gets a job at an amusement park. Published by Hard Case Crime, this was a naturally shorter book than most of his recent offerings, but had the ending that left me in tears and wanting more of the story. Mr. Mercedes, being the first in a trilogy with the sequel (Finders Keepers) being released this June, also doesn't fit into the Horror category. This is a crime novel with one major twist that makes it so special and entertaining: it's no mystery who the killer is. Before the book was even released, the public knew the name of the man who used the pseudonym of The Mercedes Killer. It even gives you some intimate glances into his life, giving you a very charged-up, never-ending roller-coaster of a novel, throwing punches and curves whenever it possibly can. It warrants a re-read, and it's a terrific book if you're looking to pass the time with some "stellar fiction," as I like to consider his body of work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hard boiled detective goodnes. I like when an author goes out of his comfort zone and known genre and tackles a new idea. I believe Mr. King has done a great job with this book. A great crime, thriller and detective story. I am looking forward to Finders Keepers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good, Worth Re-Reading A lot of people on here are saying that it's "not typical King," but I beg to differ. I mean, it's not the straightfoward horror that he is known for in such tales as Pet Sematary, IT, or perhaps The Shining, but it's still a really good tale. King has been branching off in the last few years, so it is a typical direction for him to take, in my opinion. This is a really good detective story, and I don't generally like detective stories. A unique aspect of this story is that it gives us the full identity of the killer right from the get-go, giving the reader an advantage that none of the characters have. It is something I've never seen before in a story, something I really enjoyed and would love to see again. I can't wait for his sequel, Finders Keepers, which is out in June of 2015.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Typical, Stephen King. This novel is as good as it gets. I thought I would grow bored, was I wrong....unlike many of King's novels, their are hero's. I have to say, King captured these hero's in the true sense of the word.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A book not soon forgotten Definitely a book I am glad I read and had some characters that were well defined that you could emphasize with both good and bad. Stephen King fans will eat this up but not a book like The Stand or The Shining.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sleepless Nights... An "un-typical" Stephen King book, but still a page-turner. For die-hard fans, you'll recognize the writing style as being exclusive to Mr. King, but the plot is definitely not what we expect from this Master of the Macabre. I'm over half way through, and I can't/don't want to - put it down. This is a book that has me lying to myself: "Just a few more pages..." Even with a book that has a somewhat plausible story line (i.e. no clowns coming out of storm drains, no black or white magic), I am captivated from the front cover to the Scan Code and ISBN on the back cover.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from really enjoyed this one Mr. King can write anything, and make it wonderfully readable and exciting. This book is not horror or supernatural, other than the horrors of real life, but is a great detective story. Characters are unexpected and very effective. Story is harsh but well done. I hated to finish this one, but heard rumours there might be a sequel. Definitely one of King favourites, and I have a few!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Something different Definitely not your "typical" Stephen King novel, and may disappoint some of his fans for that reason. It is a good "whodunit", however. Bill Hodges is a retired detective who gets a letter from one of the few bad guys he failed to catch, and decides to go after him on his own. Will he save the city from a mass murder, or end up an unwilling participant?
Date published: 2014-06-23
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Detective/Suspense Thriller Bill Hodges is a retired police detective. He lives alone, existing primarily on convenience foods and television programs. He is overweight, unmotivated, lonely and feeling as if his life is truly over, but for the fact that he is still breathing … a situation he plans to rectify soon. That’s when an unusual letter arrives from someone the police named “the Mercedes Killer”. Even 17 years after the incident (the incident being the forward of the book … so the reader is up to speed) the police are no further ahead in finding him. The letter is mocking Bill; comparing his life to any number of cliché television and movie plots about retired (and washed up) detectives. At first it seems Bill might shrug the letter off, but the more he reads through the letter the more convinced he becomes that it may have been sent by the actual Mercedes Killer. The Killer has invited Bill to “chat” on an anonymous internet site called “Under the Blue Umbrella”. This voice from the past gives Det. Ret. Hodges a reason to put the gun away for now. Although he knows he should go to the police with the information he has been given, he decides that he is going to look into this strange turn of events himself. So starts the cat and mouse game with “The Mercedes Killer”. This book is as cliché as what the killer accuses Det. Hodges’ life of becoming. But in the case of the book there is no need to put it out of its misery – it’s cliché in a good way. It is reminiscent of the old time detective/suspense novels, complete with the usual cast of characters; the young sidekick, the gorgeous love interest, the damaged unexpected helper, the psychotic killer (complete with mommy issues) and the ever present impending (yet unknown) doom. Mr. Mercedes also offers the necessary mix of dry/humorous/touching dialogue, the red herrings and that one heart-stopping moment that you really were not expecting. Die-hard Stephen King fans – beware – there is nary an other-worldly element in this book. With the exception of one very peripheral character having what seems like a precognizant moment, if you’re looking for horror you will have to settle for the real-world, mess-with-your-mind kind in this book. With one or two exceptions I always enjoy Mr. King’s books and Mr. Mercedes did not disappoint. So why not five stars? Quite frankly, I think he went on a few too many pages at the end. In my humble opinion, Mr. King has a little trouble with endings. Still a good read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mr Mercedes A good read of a very well written book by Stephen, none of the sci-fi portions of the book where cars run by themselves or time travel. It's a story of three people in twined in a hunt for a man who ran over and killed 8 people in a stolen Mercedes...he has bigger plans and the trio are engaged it a time limited search for this maniac. It's a page turner for sure!
