But her youngest son, Timothy, lies ill with pneumonia and must not be moved. Fortunately, she encounters the rats of NIMH, an extraordinary breed of highly intelligent creatures, who come up with a brilliant solution to her dilemma. And Mrs. Frisby in turn renders them a great service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Children's Classic I loved this book when I read it as a child and can't wait to get it for my nephew!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Uneven There are really two books here - the first is about Mrs Frisby and her family, and the second is about the rats escaping from NIMH. Both my son and I really enjoyed Mrs Frisby's story, but felt rather bored by the NIMH one. I'm not sure if it's because the narrative voice gets more removed or what, but it was a little disappointing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Read again and again Maybe not as flashy as the things that kids are used to today, but this book was so amazing as a child and it still holds up today. Reading the story of these incredibly clever rats will never get old. It is a book you'll read again and again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Re-read I have re-read this book so many times the cover is attached with duct tape. The story is complex, but presented in a simple narrative that will capture your imagination. The characters are loveable and the miniature world that is created is wonderful. One of my all time favorite books.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book! I don't know why this book doesn't have more of have classic status. It is a great and engaging story that is fun but also sometimes dark. It was one of my favorite books as a kid and it didn't disappoint when I revisited it as an adult.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from an absolutely wonderful story! I recently re-read the book along with it's sequels just a few weeks ago and I am reminded why this book continues to be one of my favourite books of all time. The characters are so real, and compassionate that you tend to forget that you are reading about mice and rats, which are typically not the most popular animals. The rats actually act the way that I wish more humans would and it's one of the few instances when you actively root for the rodents!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Even for ages 10 -12 This books is awesome for any age, and get you feeling the adventure. A more kid based book, you'll still enjoy the full packed action these rats go through to save their home before the harvest that could destroy it . . . Read it!! It's goood!!!!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DON'T WATCH THE MOVIE! If you already watched the movie read the book anyway! The movie has the rats using magic to get what they want, but in the book they work for it. They use their enhanced brainpower to build an amazing civilization. My engineering husband loved this book! This book is a children's classic, and I look forward to reading it to my own soon!

From Our Editors

The mysterious rats that live deep beneath the earth under the rose bush in the garden are Mrs. Frisby's only hope. Her youngest, Timothy, is ill and the ploughing will shortly begin - which means a moving day for the mouse family. Taking the elevator down the electrically lit tunnels and strange chambers of the colony, Mrs. Frisby must consult with the oldest, wisest rat of them all: Nicodemus. So begins a magical adventure, with echoes of Watership Down, of the marvellous laboratory rats with their super-intelligence and the quest to help one little mouse escape certain death. Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH garnered the late Robert C. O'Brien a 1972 Newbery Medal. Made into the gorgeous animated feature film in 1982, this contemporary classic comes to a new generation with a freshly designed cover and the original title.
