Yet a loving home is happiness, even to him who is sometimes moody, sometimes sad. And despite occasional discouragement and gloom, it is impossible to meditate habitually without large, and full, and noble emotions upon sin and pardon, heaven, God and Christ, the brotherhood ot man, and the victory of the cross. CHAPTER IV. SOME DANGERS OF THE EMOTIONAL LIFE. As there are special perils alike of the active and intellectual faculties, and Satan tempts us at one time to wilful deeds, and at another to presumptuous speculations, the life of religious emotion also has its conspicuous dangers. 1. Feelings may be first excited and afterwards relied upon, to which one has no real claim. In the great parable of the seed falling upon various soils, our Lord only mentions one immediate emotional result. It is only of the shallow hearts which are doomed to blight when the hot sun of internal affliction or external persecution dries them up that He says they straightway with joy receive it, they straightway receive it with joy, they receive the word with joy--all three narrators dwelling on their premature and ill-omened excitement. Yet how few teachers would perceive the lurking danger of such hasty gladness. It is quite possible, then, but no sign of a real work of grace, for men to snatch eagerly at the consolations of the Gospel, to be glad in the thought of a Father and of heaven, without having been humbled by any real sense of sin, without seeking for any penetrating work of grace, without making that self-surrender, in exchange for which Christ is given.
