This comical, fantastical, romantical, New York Times bestselling, (not) entirely true story of Lady Jane Grey is “an uproarious historical fantasy that’s not to be missed” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

In My Lady Jane, coauthors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows have created a one-of-a-kind YA fantasy in the tradition of The Princess Bride, featuring a reluctant king, an even more reluctant queen, a noble steed, and only a passing resemblance to actual history—because sometimes history needs a little help.

At sixteen, Lady Jane Grey is about to be married off to a stranger and caught up in a conspiracy to rob her cousin, King Edward, of his throne. But those trifling problems aren’t for Jane to worry about. Jane gets to be Queen of England.

Like that could go wrong.

Cynthia Hand is the New York Times bestselling author of the Unearthly series with HarperTeen: Unearthly, Hallowed, Radiant (an enovella) and Boundless, and the NYT bestselling contemporary, The Last Time We Say Goodbye. She teaches courses in creative writing at Boise State University. Her book, My Lady Jane, (cowritten with Brodi Ash...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comical Favorite This book is a perfect choice for bringing me out of a reading slump. After struggling to find a book that captured and held my interest, and DNFing my last pick, I was starting to become discouraged. This book caught my eye, largely due to the fluorescent text on the cover, and I decided it was time for a re-read of an old favorite. Just as before, I can't get over how much I enjoy this book. I wasn't entirely sure what to make of it the first time I read it, but the characters and the narrators' witty voices won me over, just as they did this time, as well. I highly recommend this book and feel confident that it will remain one of my Top Ten favorites.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really quick and easy read! It was funny, easy to get into, and I never got bored. I enjoyed the historical jokes and thought the plot was interesting. It was very light (nothing too intense happened), but I was still very much into it. A definite recommend!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hilarious read! Wouldn't say this book is for everyone because it's really light and has loads of historical comedy - ie it's not exactly full of intense action or mystery. Regardless, the book doesn't try to be something it's not and it makes this so fun to read because it does have loads of moments where you can't help but laugh aloud at the antics of Jane, Edward and Gifford. If you're looking for light hearted romance, magic and adventure - this book is for you!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exciting Read!! When I first got this book I was a little unsure of how it would turn out as I know the true story of Lady Jane. However I was pleasantly surprised but how much I loved this book. The authors make it so easy to love the characters in this story and the way that they have written the story is so new and fresh. I would definitely recommend this book as a must read!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this way more than I expected to I wavered on whether or not to buy this for AGES, but I cannot be more pleased that I finally did. (The shape-shifting horse guy made me pause; I was pleasantly surprised at how the authors tackled it). Alternate history + a dash of fantasy = a really enjoyable book! Highly recommend it for a fun, light-hearted read

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVED IT! My Lady Jane is just so damn fun. It kinda reminds me of Guardians of the Galaxy in the way that it doesn't take itself too seriously, but still manages to make you genuinely invested in its characters and their plot lines. It knows when to be funny, it knows when to be serious, and it never veers off too much in one direction, making the story lighthearted but still grounded. The characters are marvelously charming, and very hard not to love. We have Jane, who is smart, level-headed, and SO VERY BOOKISH; Gifford who is hilarious and so so sweet; and finally, Edward, who is sarcastic, willing to learn, and just very teenager-y (in all the good and angsty ways). The character dynamics are also a joy to read, the banter consistently and confidently hilarious. It catches you off guard in the best and most unexpected of times. And with such a peculiar twist to a historical fiction narrative—including people who can morph into all sorts of strange animals—and wonderfully self-aware narrators, the story shines even more. Having characters morph into these animals that were representative of them kinda felt like Patronuses 2.0, and also allowed for some weird, undeniably comical scenes between certain characters. All in all, My Lady Jane was the refreshing, entertaining read I was looking for, and then some.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not feeling it I am probably the only out here that did not like this book. I felt as if they tried too hard and it was just not the book for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE YA Historical Fiction meets Fantasy. This book has the best of everything. The writers are retelling history in a funny, entertaining and imaginative way. They put a fantastical spin on the events that were actually going on at the time, making a lesser heroine in history shine. It was such a fun read. I really enjoyed it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! I was honestly expecting to not like this book. It was hyped up A LOT so I had this feeling that it wasn't going to live up to expectations. I'm glad I was proven wrong. I think the best part of this book was the subtle elements of the paranormal added into this historical story. The paranormal creatures (shapeshifters in this case) were kind of eased in and they didn't change the story completely. The story could have done ok without the paranormal elements but they made it so much better. My one complaint is that if felt like everyone and their dog was becoming shapeshifters. It got a little weird (or so I thought anyways). Besides that the story was a little slow but I ended up liking the pace. The romance was super predictable but I was ok with that. Sometimes you need a book that will take you exactly in the direction you think it will.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this one so much! I love this book so much. It has everything I want in a book - great characters, a fun plot, fantasy, humor, history and ferrets! I love how the authors took it upon themselves to turn a really dark bit of history into a hilarious book. I loved each character but G is one of my favourite male characters ever - He just had my heart right from the start. I really wish there were more books with these characters but that being said, this really delivered a great stand-alone. Everyone should read this book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super quirky and unique! I laughed so much while reading this, especially with all of their modern references that I wish I could say but I don’t want to spoil for anyone. This book was such a perfect read if you’re looking for something fun, full of humor and full of action. If you expect one thing to happen, expect something different. I loved it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Refreshingly Funny Before reading this one I finished a very dense fantasy novel. When I started this one I couldn`t believe how funny it was. I found myself laughing at pretty much every page. I got two copies of this book (one from owlcrate and one from uppercase) I gave one to a friend and we have been buddy reading it. It is a GREAT book to buddy read! This book is funny and awesome. The authors do an amazing job writing this book, it doesn`t feel as though there are three people writing it since it flows so smoothly. If you want a strictly historical book, then don`t read this one. There is magic mixed in! I would definitely recommend this book!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Silly But Great I kept seeing this book floating around Instagram and thought "Oh why not, it sounds kinda cute"! I found myself giggling while reading this book, who even giggles anymore! It was fun, light, funny and just a nice easy read. The book is written in different POVs, Edward, Gifford (G) & Jane. Each character had their own voice and I think having 3 different authors really helped that aspect! The one downfall for me was the flow of the writing. I did find it choppy in the 3rd part of the book. Not sure what happened but it felt rushed to me and I thought if they had removed some parts of part 2 and extended part 3 it would've worked better for me personally. However! Not something to dwell on this book was a great read! If you're a fan of The Princess Bride, Austen, and Shakespeare I really think you'll enjoy this one! There were quite a few references to all 3 and my favourite Shakespeare quote was the inspiration behind a sentence in the book that made me super giddy as it described Jane perfectly!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looooooved it! I read this while on holiday and it was the best thing ever. It's light, funny, witty, clever with a perfect touch of romance and so well written. You would never guess that it was written by three authors. I just couldn't put it down I was completely addicted! It feels like an Austen book mixed with magic and all the good stuff!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A For the Lover of Books Review Number of pages: 491 Number of times read (including the time before this review): 1 Rating (out of five stars): 2.5 I have always been fascinated by Tudor England. The Tudor era is one of the reasons I want to see the Tower of London so badly. But when I heard about My Lady Jane, strangely, I didn’t want to read it. Here was a YA book set in one of my favorite time periods, and I had no desire to read it. It wasn’t just that I prefer reading about Mary and Elizabeth to reading about Edward and Jane, I simply felt deep down that I was not going to enjoy it. Then, a reviewer with whom I have shared similar opinions in the past, posted a review of it on Goodreads calling hilarious, and I thought that I should maybe give it a shot. My Lady Jane was hilarious… during the first half of the book (Just to clarify, the authors split the book into two parts, but when I say first half, I mean that if you split the book in half, the half that comes first is the first half, so a portion of part 1 is in the second half).  It was lighthearted, funny, and the authors managed to dodge mentioning religion completely by making it a fantasy book (I mean this whole ordeal only took place because of religion, but why even mention it? (I’m being sarcastic here) Turns out the removal of religion doesn’t work later on in the story anyway.). It was a happy book after a long list of depressing Fantasy and Historical Fiction books. I then made it to the second half of the book, around where Mary comes to power, and I started to enjoy it less and less. The humour that could have made that part less depressing was gone, and it felt like the plot slowed. Jokes fell flat, references had me stop reading to research them, and all I wanted to do was finish it. In the second half, the rules the authors put in place didn’t apply, things that are supposed to be factually accurate aren’t, mistakes are made, and boredom set in. By the second half I was annoyed that it was more of a children’s fairy tale than a historical fiction novel. The biggest thing that angered me, however, was that the two groups of warring people basically don’t exist, because of a reveal near the end. It made everything that happened in the book pointless and it wasn’t even mildly amusing. The characters were all either bland, or horribly annoying. Edward was so whinny that I wanted to open his mouth and poison him (successfully this time) myself. I have no idea why any of the other characters were even remotely kind to him, let alone why they liked him, but I guess his complaining was more interesting that being left alone with their dreadfully boring selves. The characters weren’t completely boring, however, since they often “went out of character”. It was interesting to see if the next sentence would be consistent or out of place. My wish for the death of Edward brings me to another point: no one dies. I guess it tells you something about me that I’m upset about this, but it felt rather condescending to me. It felt as though they were protecting me from being scared by the death of a character. On top of that, they called sex “a very special hug” and explained things as though I have no idea how to spell my own name (though to be fair, most people can’t pronounce and/or spell my name (Moira) specifically) Overall, My Lady Jane started out amusing, but ended up being boring, condescending, and inconsistent. It has therefore earned it 2.5 stars out of 5.
