about

For the sake of an imperiled kingdom, the line between "traitor"and "savior" must blur . . . and vanish.

Though barely a teenager, Wyl Thirsk must now assume the role he has been destined for since birth: commander of the Morgravian army -- an awesome responsibility that calls him to the royal palace of the crown prince Celimus. Already a cruel despot who delights in the suffering of others, Celimus enjoys forcing his new general to witness his depraved "entertainments." But a kindness to a condemned witch in her final, agonizing hours earns young Thirsk a miraculous bequest, while inflaming the wrath of his liege lord.

With war looming in the north, Wyl must obey Celimus's treacherous dictates and undertake a suicidal journey to an enemy court -- armed with a mysterious power that could prove both boon and curse. For unless he accepts Myrren's gift, it will surely destroy him . . . and the land he must defend.

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Witches give the best presents I'm only halfway though, but so far I'm liking this book. Weirdly, this book has a ton of bad reviews online, mostly from people who seem traumatized that a book that essentially takes place in a medieval-type fantasy world has brutal violence, sexism and rape happening. Perhaps they were fans of the author's previous romance writing, but haven't read much fantasy before? Well, I've read 30+ years of fantasy, and this book actually has a twist to it (the "gift") that I hadn't seen before. And, while there has been (so far) one fairly graphic torture scene, I didn't find it gratuitous and in fact it was a key scene in showing why our lead character ends up 'gifted'. Overall, the story follows a young general who is betrayed by his king and, after surviving an assassination attempt (sort of....if you read the book, you'll understand) must try to protect his family and friends while also plotting to remove the evil king from power. Pretty standard stuff, but the writer does write compelling characters, and I'm definitely invested in seeing what happens next.
