about

The New York Times bestselling novel from Dennis Lehane is a gripping, unnerving psychological thriller about the effects of a savage killing on three former friends in a tightly knit, blue-collar Boston neighborhood.

When they were children, Sean Devine, Jimmy Marcus, and Dave Boyle were friends. But then a strange car pulled up to their street. One boy got into the car, two did not, and something terrible happened -- something that ended their friendship and changed all three boys forever.

Twenty-five years later, Sean is a homicide detective. Jimmy is an ex-con who owns a corner store. And Dave is trying to hold his marriage together and keep his demons at bay -- demons that urge him to do terrible things. When Jimmy's daughter is found murdered, Sean is assigned to the case. His investigation brings him into conflict with Jimmy, who finds his old criminal impulses tempt him to solve the crime with brutal justice. And then there is Dave, who came home the night Jimmy's daughter died covered in someone else's blood.

A tense and unnerving psychological thriller, Mystic River is also an epic novel of love and loyalty, faith and family, in which people irrevocably marked by the past find themselves on a collision course with the darkest truths of their own hidden selves.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved it This book made me wonder why I don't read more mystery novels. In short, an incident that rocked the lives of three young boys follows them through adulthood and ultimately seals their fate. This was a great, suspenseful read and the lives of the three men intertwine in a satisfying way. Although it was a long book, it was also a quick page-turner as you were anxious to find out what happened next. I will definitely be adding more mystery novels to my list.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Great I wasn't really into this book. I didn't find the characters to have too much depth or the plot to be overly interesting. I'm not generally a fan of the crime drama genre so maybe that is why I didn't enjoy it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lamentation Not a great mystery novel. Characters are rather wooden and plot holds no great surprises. I doubt that I will read another of this author'books.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from More than just a crime novel... I was amazed with how quickly characters developed into their own unique personalities in such deeply interesting ways. The story is compelling and incredibly well told - but, it's the characters - how they grow, how they respond to the story and how they interact with one another that makes this book such an excellent read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Engaging. Thought-provoking. Well-written and engaging thriller! Never boring. Felt a connection with the characters and understood their perspectives. This book, although a thriller, is heart-warming in a sense that it depicts the reality of relationships and family and loyalty and the reasoning behind life choices. Touching!
