Two hundred and seventy-two Newfoundlanders who went over the top on July 1, 1916 were killed. No regiment suffered more casualties. It was the single greatest disaster in the island''s history.
Kevin Major is the author of No Man''s Land, Hold Fast, Dear Bruce Springsteen and Blood Red Ochre, among others. His books have won numerous awards and have been translated into several languages. He lives in St. John''s, Newfoundland, with his wife and two sons.
