about

A sleuthing substitute teacher with a cute dog named Cheese Puff gives the wheels of justice a shove when her overbearing sister is accused of murder.

After tangling with killers (NO SUBSTITUTE FOR MURDER) and a deranged drug dealer (NO SUBSTITUTE FOR MONEY), substitute teacher Barbara Reed craves routine, relaxation, romance, and quality time with drug cop Dave Martin.

Moving in together seems like the way to achieve that. But Dave’s teenage daughter is part of the package—a package filled with drama, conflict, stress, and shirked responsibility.

And Allison’s issues are only the tip of a looming iceberg. Thanks to Mrs. Ballantine, Cheese Puff’s obedience level falls to new lows. Meanwhile, Barb’s smarmy ex-husband lands a job at her condo complex, curriculum changes spark teacher turmoil, and Barb’s bombastic sister, Iz, launches a protest against the justice system.

Then the police chief resigns, leaving Dave at the mercy of a new boss with an old grudge—a boss who wants Iz arrested for murder.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Substitute Teacher Barbara Reed is fun This is book 3 in series and Barbara Reed finds herself wrapping up a school year as a substitute teacher, as a graduate student and with her condo being overrun as her policeman boyfriend Dave Martin moves in with her along with his teenage daughter Allison and his work partner Lola, a golden retriever. Add ex-husband Jake back on the scene and looking for money and a job and you have the three ring circus that is Barbara's life and more like 5 rings when her older sister Iz gets shot at a feminist rally while visiting Barb and Jake's new job is as her condo complex's handyman. PS Jake isn't handy. Great fun, good teenage drama queens and adult eccentricities make this a series I hope hasn't ended. I'll miss Cheese Puff.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Funny mystery I don't usually read mysteries, but when I do, I want them to be just like this. Quirky characters, snappy dialog, family chaos and a bratty dog.
