Rated 3 out of 5 by from A good read The plot was good and the characters were interesting enough, however, I didn't think that Gross's writing was as tight in this novel as it is in some of his other works like The Blue Zone. Many areas were repetitive and dragged out and didn't let the story move along as smoothly as it should have. I'm recommending this as a book to read because it is still good...................just not great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing History! Superb account of John Astor's short-lived fur-trading operations in today's Oregon where the question of the fate of the Pacific coastline would be determined. Americans who read this book will question the lost opportunity of acquiring a continuous American Pacific coastline from Alaska all the way to San Diego! At the same time, the invincibility of the British Navy coupled with determined fur traders from the Northwest Company ensured that the future Canada had access to the markets of the Orient. Superb writing!!!
