In the tradition of Uni the Unicorn and Gaston, this heartwarming and adorable debut picture book tells the story of a young unicorn who was born under the sea to a family of narwhals.

Growing up in the ocean, Kelp has always assumed that he was a narwhal like the rest of his family. Sure, he’s always been a little bit different—his tusk isn’t as long, he’s not as good of a swimmer, and he really doesn’t enjoy the cuisine. Then one night, an extra strong current sweeps Kelp to the surface, where he spots a mysterious creature that looks just like him! Kelp discovers that he and the creature are actually unicorns. The revelation leaves him torn: is he a land narwhal or a sea unicorn? But perhaps, if Kelp is clever, he may find a way to have the best of both worlds.

Told with heartwarming illustrations and spare, sweet text, Jessie Sima’s debut picture book is about fitting in, standing out, and the all-encompassing love of family.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Frameworthy Art, Beautiful Story Not Quite Narwhal by Jessie Sima...beautiful story, gorgeous illustrations, perfectly giftable book! Kelp was born under the sea but he isn't like the other narwhals. He really isn't a very good swimmer but no one seems to mind. One day, he gets swept up in a strong current and surfaces to see a vision on a cliff, something that looks remarkably like him. Slowly but surely he swims his way to land to find Land Narwhals, aka Unicorns. He soon discovers that he is also a unicorn and learns all of the unicorn ways. He seems happy but really begins to miss his family in the sea. Is there a way for Kelp to have it all? A lovely story about finding your place, being brave enough to embrace your differences, and finding a way to meet in the middle. The gorgeous illustrations make every page of this story frameworthy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favourite picture book of the year This was absolutely gorgeous and fun and whimsical! The salesperson at my local bookstore and I were reflecting on how this would be a great way to breech the theme of gender and sexual diversity with children, which I think is a wonderful way to push this story further than entertainment.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Home is where the heart is Kelp was born in the ocean and he looked like a Narwhal but knew something wasn’t right. Although the other creatures accepted him when he found out he was really a unicorn he had to decide where he wanted to be. Adorable illustrations reinforce the concept of acceptance. Readers’ ages four to eight will love Kelp and his story of family.
