about

If you think you know what's the worst than can happen while traveling, the essayists inNot So Funny When it Happened will set you straight. In over 30 scathingly funny pieces, a diverse array of authors shows just how quickly a pleasant vacation can turn into an embarrassing anecdote. In Vietnam, John Wood invents increasingly elaborate fictions to explain his ex-wife's accidental death" in order to avoid humiliating himself by admitting he's divorced. Australian traveler Jayce White awakens in Zimbabwe to a baboon at his breakfast table helping himself to leftovers with primal flair. Collected inNot So Funny When it Happened, these stories and more show that when traveling, even the best of plans fall by the wayside. "
Tim Cahill is a founding editor of Outside magazine and a contributing editor to Rolling Stone, Esquire, and Men’s Journal. The author of seven books, he lives in Montana.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great gift book You know, I'm not a fan of the travel genre. Mostly because it makes me feel like a complete loser. I get sea sick on the Rhine (an accomplishment, really), I'm afraid of flying and I can't travel with just a backpack. So travel books really only highlight my sissy ways in the big world. But this book is fun. Really fun. Okay, it's not the best in terms of layout and the segues are a bit stretched, but really, the stories are good. The writers are good. And if you know of anyone who has ever had to stay in a hostel, pee in a really bad toilet or has lost their cookies at 35,000 feet - this is an excellent pick.
