Washington accepted the proffered services very courteously, and assigned to Mr. J. A temporary place in his family. This honorable place he resigned on arriving at the borders of New Hampshire.' There was another duty assigned to his office as Marshal by the Government of the United States, and one of much more importance, viz: that of taking the Census of the District of Massachusetts.
