"Somewhere around middle age, Bob was living a life that had become characterized by stress, ennui and more than one bad habit. Inspired by the changes he saw in his young son after an Outward Bound trek, Bob decided that he wanted to experience the same revitalization. Having set his first goal, and ultimately achieving it, Bob opened the door to a lifetime of adventures that have energized, enlivened and inspired him ever since.
From marathons to triathlons to adventures of the heart and soul, Bob's quests take us from beautiful locales in his own backyard to places as far-flung as Morocco, India, Kuwait, Ukraine and more. Whether sea kayaking off Vancouver Island's west coast, climbing magical Machu Picchu at sunrise or zip-lining and whitewater rafting in Costa Rica, Bob's animated detail and charming self-deprecating humour show us that, whatever our age, means or circumstances, everyone can have thrilling adventures.
In the process, what Bob learned about himself, others and the world beyond will inspire many to do what he continues to do. Bob is proof that we just need a little discipline, a bit of enthusiasm, a dollop of common sense, and finally, a tiny push to get us off the couch and out the door."

Over the past twenty years, Bob ...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Important Book One of my favourite quotes about life is: “The real tragedy is the tragedy of the man who never in his life braces himself for his one supreme effort--he never stretches to his full capacity, never stands up to his full stature.” --Arnold Bennett I found "Off the Couch and Out the Door" compelling because it's a collection of stories about how this tragedy can be avoided. It’s about a “poster boy for an early-onset heart attack” becoming a marathon runner, an adventurer, and much more. In a time when people are addicted to the internet, this book reminds us of the magic that the real world has in store for those who seek it. Like any good book, "Off the Couch and Out the Door" can be enjoyed on many levels. The puns and self-depreciating humour made me laugh out loud. The description whet my appetite for travel. I wanted to trudge up the Golden Stairs, passing rusting artifacts of the Klondike Gold Rush. I wanted to tread softly through SGaang Gwaii, an abandoned 1880’s Haida village frozen in time. The cross-cultural observations and historical tidbits complement the adventures nicely; so do the people, and the relationships they develop. "Off the Couch and Out the Door" is not so much about travel as it is about stepping outside your comfort zone, and opening yourself to the unknown. Although the target audience is adults, it can inspire anyone who wants to stretch to their full capacity. If you want to add some pizazz to your life, you can’t go wrong with "Off the Couch and Out the Door."
