The scene is iconic. Oliver Twist, meek and underprivileged, extends his bowl to his master and says, “Please, sir, I want some more.” The line pulls at the heartstrings. It’s emotional connection runs throughout the novel and is one of the reasons that the book has remained popular to this day. Growing up in it himself, Dickens was well acquainted with immense poverty and channeled much of that into his masterful creation.

Oliver runs away to London, leaving behind the miserable servitude he was forced to endure. Faced with no other options, he joins a band of thieves, which is headed by the malevolent Fagin. Oliver’s struggle for a better life resonates with so many and his struggle for a sense of belonging resonates with all.

Known for his social critiques, Dickens introduces his better-off readers to the issues of the poor in the novel, hoping to bring about change through his literature. It is a tale of the struggle of hope against malice that transcends time.
