about

Twenty-four-year-old Olivia Taylor Jones has the perfect life. The only daughter of a wealthy, prominent Chicago family, she has an Ivy League education, pursues volunteerism and philanthropy, and is engaged to a handsome young tech firm CEO with political ambitions.

But Olivia’s world is shattered when she learns that she’s adopted. Her real parents? Todd and Pamela Larsen, notorious serial killers serving a life sentence. When the news brings a maelstrom of unwanted publicity to her adopted family and fiancé, Olivia decides to find out the truth about the Larsens.
Olivia ends up in the small town of Cainsville, Illinois, an old and cloistered community that takes a particular interest in both Olivia and her efforts to uncover her birth parents’ past.

Aided by her mother’s former lawyer, Gabriel Walsh, Olivia focuses on the Larsens’ last crime, the one her birth mother swears will prove their innocence. But as she and Gabriel start investigating the case, Olivia finds herself drawing on abilities that have remained hidden since her childhood, gifts that make her both a valuable addition to Cainsville and deeply vulnerable to unknown enemies. Because there are darker secrets behind her new home, and powers lurking in the shadows that have their own plans for her.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book! Kelley Armstrong is my favourite author, and the cainsville series is the best!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A very intriguing start to a series. There's A LOT going on in it, but it's basically a mystery, peppered with paranormal elements that I'm sure will become much more front and centre in the sequels. While the initial hook of the story is certainly interesting (Olivia, who grew up in a wealthy, privileged family and had a dream life, finds out she's actually adopted and her biological parents are none other than a pair of serial killers), it was our protagonist who really kept me engaged with the story. It took me several days just to slowly get through the first couple hundred pages, which is pretty unusual for me, but as Olivia learned to be more independent and sure-footed, I became more invested. Olivia's intelligent, calculating, and tenacious, and I loved how no bullshit she was, especially with Gabriel Walsh. Speaking of Gabriel, my favourite thing about this book was easily the dynamic between him and Olivia. She's able to hold her ground against him and doesn't let her opinions get overshadowed by his, which is impressive given that he basically comes off as a block of ice - tall, cold and impenetrable. There's no romance at all in this one which is nice, but the foundations are being set for a strong partnership between the two that I'm so excited to see develop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 100% a MUST READ I have the entire series didn't realize to write a review til now. Olivia is an independent strong character who grew up on the right side of the track with wealthy parents living the privileged life most of us only dream of until she discovers that she was adopted and her real parents are serial killers amid all this she flees the city to a small town Cainsville and that so it begins. The visions the omens begin. This intriguing page turning mystery novel is worth the read and Kelley Armstrong never disappoints. I began reading all her Otherworld series and since then book after book series after series Im HOOKED!!! Her stories are compelling and thrilling and captivating. I was sad to hear Rituals was the last of this series. I HIGHLY recommend this book and the entire #Cainsville series ... #ReadTheNorth

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Meh. Billed as a supernatural mystery, this book is full of telling rather than showing. It also didn't help that - at nearly 500 pages - the mystery is still not solved by the end. Olivia is a Mary Sue, and the only character that is even remotely compelling is Gabriel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Omens Book Review What and awesome start to a great series. Kelley Armstrong did not disappoint when she wrote this book. The prologue gave a great background look before getting into the story. I have the whole series in hardcover. I am not surprised that the first three books in hardcover are sold out. Thanks Kelley for a job well done.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Freaking GOOD This book was fantastic. It features a strong independent female character, which I really appreciate who has found herself to be in the difficult situation of having recently lost her father and then finding out that her biological parents who she had no idea about, are serial killers. And so it begins. It was well written, enticing and just overall a wonderful book. Anyone who likes mystery and delicious characters that you can sink your teeth into should definitely check out this book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Complex, Warped series that is highly addicting This is a new series from one of my favourite authors. The first chapter gets your heart pumping, it's thrilling and exciting. A bit slower in some parts, but it's a new book with lots of history to root down ! Very complex, I would not suggest this as the first Kelley Armstrong series to read...unless you read all the books back-to-back (this series is very twisty-turny and every bit of information is absolutely important).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Addicted This series took over my life. Waiting for the final book to come out in August is killing me. The storyline is great but it's the characters that keep me invested in these books. I love every single one of them. I can't wait to see how it ends.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Depth, Complexity, and Faeries, ofcourse! I am writing this review after re-reading this novel for the second time in preparation to read the fourth book in the series; before the fifth book comes out soon. So, contextually, I was more aware of the on-going side ploys and easter eggs this time around. First, I would like to offer a suggestion for those just starting this series. Try to read the books sequentially. There is a lot of depth, complexity, and tongue in cheek irony you may miss by not reading the novels within one right after the other. I personally felt quite lost trying to read the third book a year after I'd read the second. Now, for the story line. It's intriguing and unique, very fast paced and exciting. Armstrong fans will recognize a few of her favourite tropes - government conspiracies, brusque male characters with troubled backgrounds but soft hearts, and lots of mythology. For the most part I think the plot jives, even with an ending that leaves many a questions unanswered. The real standout for me with this series is the weaving in of welsh and gaelic dialect as clues to the overarching mystery. Also, I have to say, fae and serial killers? An incredibly interesting premise.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this series As a previous reviewer pointed out, it's not really a great mystery, but regardless I really enjoy this series. Kelley Armstrong books are generally quick reads and this one is no exception. Olivia is a great character who has several sides. Supernatural aspects are all over the place which makes this a fun read. It's a little on the darker side than some of her previous books (I'm thinking Women of the Underworld series) but I was very excited for the next installment :)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from First Kelley Armstrong and not terrible impressed... It was an okay read. The idea of a girl born to privilege finding out that she is the child of two serial killers is intriguing. But much of the "mystery" in the book is Gabriel and Olivia (a bland character) trudging around asking questions and getting answers. It wasn't terrible, but if you like mystery there's way better out there.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing, here do you go to hide when you find out your real parents are serial killers? I must admit, I'm biased. Heavily biased. In my opinion, Kelley Armstrong is one of the best YA novelists out right now. Her stories are hot and gripping, filled with twists and turns. Your heart will pump and your eyes will water as Olivia Taylor-Jones goes on her mission for self discover and her journey in discovering the truth about her biological parents. The town of Cainsville is eerie and mysterious and you leave you with questions upon questions. As the story begins, I have to admit I rolled my eyes a few times because of how unrealistically people took the news about Olivia. As that part of the story started to fade, I really enjoyed it a lot more. I like that Armstrong didn't overuse love as a subplot - that's what most YA novels are doing, and I hate that. Kelley created a great and gripping novel without abusing a romantic plot. I loved the "supernatural" part of this story, it was enough that it ADDED to the plot but not enough to be considered a "supernatural story", as an early reviewer said, this novel is about 5% supernatural. Think of it kind of like the story was independent and Rose and Patrick and Olivia JUST HAPPENED to add supernatural elements to it. I have a lot of questions still, a lot of welsh words I still don't understand, hopes about Gabriel, Olivia and the Taylor-Jones', questions about Todd Larson. I guess I'll just have to wait for Cainsville #2, that I will DEFINITELY be reading

Rated 5 out of 5 by from In love with this series. I bought this book based on the authors name alone. I've read many of her other books and decided to give this a try. Again, she doesn't disappoint. I'm currently reading book number 4 of this series and I would recommend buying them all at once because as soon as you are done one, you are going to want to move on to the next one. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favourite series!!! I'm in love with this series. This is my number one recommendation for anyone looking for a new series to read. Brilliantly written and full of suspense, action, growth and romance.

Editorial Reviews

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER"Armstrong is a talented and evocative writer who knows well how to balance the elements of good, suspenseful fiction, and her stories evoke poignancy, action, humour and suspense." The Globe and Mail“Like the creepy, spooky town of Cainsville, Kelley Armstrong’s Omens lured me in. I was busy, way too busy for this book, which, through a series of surprises and sleights of hand, had me conspiring for ways to get back to the gripping story, the colorfully bizarre cast of characters, and the clever, strong, smart heroine at its center. Don’t pick this book up if you have anything else to do. It will grab you by the collar and won’t let you up for air until it’s good and ready. And once you’re done, you won’t soon forget it.” Lisa Unger, New York Times bestselling author of In the Blood“Cainsville might be a nice place to visit, but I’m too creeped out to live there. Luckily, Armstrong isn’t, and her dispatches from this village filled with sinister secrets are going to be keeping her readers up well into the night.” Linwood Barclay, internationally bestselling author of Trust Your Eyes“One of the best new series debuts this year! With its compelling characters and completely original set-up, Omens delivers a powerful combination of suspenseful thrills and supernatural chills. I can’t wait to read more!” Lisa Gardner, New York Times bestselling author of Touch & Go
