about

Collected here in a single volume for the first time, On Liberty, Utilitarianism, Considerations on Representative Government, and The Subjection of Women show Mill applying his liberal utilitarian philosophy to a range of issues that remain vital today - issues of the nature of ethics, the scope and limits of individual liberty, the merits of and costs of democratic government, and the place of women in society. In his Introduction John Gray describes these essays as applications of Mill's doctrine of the Art of Life, as set out in A System of Logic. Using the resources of recent revisionist scholarship, he shows Mill's work to be far richer and subtler than traditional interpretations allow. - ;Collected here in a single volume for the first time, On Liberty, Utilitarianism, Considerations on Representative Government, and The Subjection of Women show Mill applying his liberal utilitarian philosophy to a range of issues that remain vital today - issues of the nature of ethics, the scope and limits of individual liberty, the merits of and costs of democratic government, and the place of women in society. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Four Masterpieces - Brilliant Edition! One of the founder of modern liberalism, writings of John Stuart Mill remains as potent as when he wrote them in the bust and tumble of the Victorian era. Probably with the great of Jefferson’s “Declaration of Independence,” no other document has been quoted back at tyrants than Mill’s magnum opus “On Liberty.” Indeed it would not be an over exaggeration to state that we live in the Age of Mill with all its innovative genius, sad realities, and laughable paradoxes. In this wonderful Oxford edition, there is compiled Mill’s four most famous works: “On Liberty,” “Utilitarianism,” “Represented Government,” and “The Subjugation of Women.” All mentally stimulating masterpieces of political philosophy which can also be read for the pleasure of prose!
