Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everyone loves a good Dracula story If you've read Cat and Bones you know all about Vlad. It awesome that he has his own books. I just enjoy anything by Jeaniene Frost. She just writes some great stories with strong female characters. I enjoy the banter between the main characters, nothing better than sarcastic banter

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good start to what should be a good series When I picked this up I was expecting another adult supernatural book that focused more on the adult content then on the story line. I guess I didn’t do my homework. If I would have looked up Jeaniene Frost before I would have recognized some of her other work and realized that I was in for an actual story. Yup…Jeaniene knows how to write a sexy vampire, but she also knows how to write a good supernatural story too. THANK GOD! This story was interesting to say the least. I have so many questions but I guess/hope that some of those will be answered in the next book which is set to come out in 2013. When I finished I thought “how rude” because it leaves you hanging and wanting to read the next one. Now, I picked this up because everyone was talking about how in love with Vlad they were. I will admit that I actually had a hard time falling for him. If you read the summary you know that Vlad is pretty old…and he’s inspired a pretty iconic character which means that Vlad has done some things….so I found it hard to get over those thing, but then he says things like I protect what is mine and I consider you mine and it gets your blood going. But, he’s cocky and at first I was like slap that smile right off his face but you don’t slap Vlad. That is just a no no, but then you find yourself quite alright with his cockiness, in fact it starts to make you smile. And of course with a girl like Leila how can you not like her. She is strong, independent, and protects those that are hers. Ou….this is going to be a good match. Good: Leila: Olympic gymnast, powerful, cocky, independent, determined, caring. Kick-butt. Vlad: straight up sexy and he knows it. Not to mention protective and jealous. Maximus: Loyal. Hot. Awesome. Need to find him a girl so Vlad doesn’t kill him for looking at Leila like that Vlad’s men: Hot. Loyal. Awesome. Bad: Like I said I questioned Vlad in the beginning and I couldn’t seem to fall for him so easily. I still wouldn’t say I’ve fallen for him although he is starting to appeal to me. But, I believe that my not being able to like him from the get go is what stops be from being able to give this book the full five. Overall (Writing style, story line, and general): Overall the writing was very well done. The action was fast, but easy to follow and the humour that was there was easily and well done. The characters were also very easy to picture and understand their motives. The story line was very interesting and I loved how it intertwined with all the history behind the Vlad story. All in all I will be continuing with this series and I recommend that you pick this book up if you are not afraid of some adult content. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good fun!! (In the event the Chapters-Indigo website elects to delete my rating, I mention here that I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars/leaves.) I enjoyed this one. It is great fluffy fun for the urban fantasy and paranormal romance fan. Apparently this is the first in a series -I am certainly looking forward to seeing where this will go next. Good points: I enjoyed the two main characters. For instance, I liked the fact that Leila/Frankie was both strong and compassionate and I liked the fact that Vlad (i.e. her vampire love interest and the other main character in the story) also had both of these qualities while at the same time being entirely ruthless when necessary (a ruthlessness doubtless honed by centuries of war and combat). The world building was not wildly original but was fun. The plot moved along very well and kept me hooked. Bad/not so good points: I have relatively few negative/constructive criticism comments to make here, other than the fact that Vlad did come across as the uber-male uber-macho and somewhat stereotypical love interest of romance novels. Despite this, I found him and his relationship with the main character enjoyable as he did feel (to me anyways) like a fully fledged character and not like a cardboard cutout of the 'sexy macho male' of many a romance novel. I believe that this is a consequence of the fact that his past, while not dealt with in overwhelming detail, was dealt with to a certain extent, as were certain fundamental aspects of his character (e.g. the fact that his greatest 'sin' referred to the grief he had felt over his first wife's death). These aspects served to make him likeable, IMHO, and helped the reader *know* the character just a bit. I will also say that the ending did feel just a tad abrupt since Vlad's feelings (or lack thereof) for Leila were never dealt with and since we did not learn whether or not the big evil mastermind was truly dead (they had just left him buried beneath a pile of rocks). While I have read many more abrupt endings which truly made me feel like I had read only half a book, the two aspects I mentioned did leave me feeling just a little dissatisfied. One reason for this is likely the fact that leaving the villain's status in suspense felt like a 'hook' to get the reader to read the next novel. Another is the fact that the main character's feelings towards one another were part of the plot and were not resolved or dealt with by the end of the book (which left me with the 'hanging' or 'unfinished novel' feeling). Other books I recommend: -Dragon Bound, by Thea Harrison -Stormwalker, by Alysson James -The Demon In Me, by Michelle Rowen -Dead Girls are Easy, by Terri Garey -Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between, by JA Saare -The Better Part of Darkness, by Kelly Gay -Fantasy Lover, by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING ( a copy was provided for me by hapercollins for review ) ( originally posted in email for review for harpercollins ) Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost is the first book in her Night Prince series which is another spin off from her Night Huntress and Night Huntress world series and I am a huge fan of both. We start Once Burned off by meeting the character Leila who is a human with some extras, she got electrocuted by a downed power line when she was younger and it caused her to have an electric current in her right hand so if she touches anyone they get zapped and she also sees in to there past, present and futures.Because of these powers some vampires decide to use her abilities to catch a very ancient and infamous vampire Vlad Tepash ( who is the REAL Dracula )but under events and circumstances Leila and Vlad team up to stop his enemies from coming after him and in the process they get close and form a relationship. When i found out Vlad was getting his own book I got really excited and when I found out he was getting a series I squealed like I had Bieber Fever because Vlad is one of my favourite characters from the Night Huntress books, he has such a great personality and he really holds his own as a character. Leila as the other main character in the book as well as the narrator was great, I thought she was very strong and was able to hold her own especially in tough situations and the best thing was she is a great match for Vlad, the interactions between them were great as well as comical and it flowed so great. Jeaniene Frost is one of my favourite authors because she is so great at what she does, her writing as usual was fantastic again her books just flow so nicely that the next thing you know your finished the book. the story line for this book was awesome I never got bored and I was never annoyed with any of the characters or the situations that were going on. Overall this book was amazing I have no complaints except that I wish it was longer I'm not ready to wait until next spring for another dose of Vlad and Leila.I highly recommend this book to any Jeaniene Frost fans or avid paranormal romance readers, this book has everything you would want in a good story it has action, romance, great writing, awesome characters and a pace that keeps you very ingrained into the story and I can't wait for more. check this book out.
