about

'A sensitive and sometimes-moving look at a man drowning in the sorrows of his past, with a prickly relationship with his father and with a child who desperately needs to trust someone... A sweetly told tale of fatherhood and loss.'Kirkus ReviewsIt was a butcher who saw the man stashing the kid in the car boot. He didn't really know what he'd seen. Detective Bart Moy, newly returned to the Australian country town where his father still lives, finds nothing. Nobody reports a boy missing. Still, he looks deeper into the butcher's story-after all, he had a son of his own once. When the boy does turn up-silent, traumatized-things are no clearer. Who is he? Where did he come from and what happened to him?A mystery, a meditation on fatherhood, and an examination of love and loss.
Stephen Orr is the author of several published works of fiction and non-fiction. His novel Time's Long Ruin was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers' Prize and longlisted for the Miles Franklin Award in 2011. He lives in Adelaide.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unputdownable I really enjoyed this very evocative and gripping story - not since Rebus have we had a detective with such heart and complexity. The unfolding mystery was complex and detailed, and I appreciated the less than neat conclusion. The Australian setting was true to life and not clichéd which I appreciated. A terrific, unputdownable read!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 0ne b0y missing Gave this book this rating as the story was very engaging and got you hooked. The main character was not your run of the mill detective and the plot cleverly weaved his own personal issues through the story. This had a different slant o a crime novel. The descriptions 0f the location where the crime unravelled put you right in the picture and added to the feelng of hopelessness and desperation.
