Shortlisted for the Ontario Library Association’s Red Maple Award, The Other Place is Monica Hughes’ latest young adult hit, a futuristic tale with a political edge. All of the trademark elements that make Hughes’ books so successful are here—intelligent and fast-paced plotting, subjects that resonate with today’s kids, believable characters who come to rely on the power of their hearts and minds and, most important, a terrific story that grabs readers right from the first paragraph.

Banished to a penal colony in the anonymous Habitat W, they join the shadowy ranks of the “disappeareds.” When Alison’s brother Billy escapes from their prison, Alison begins to discover “the other place”—and a new hope for the future.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from the future is a page away Monica Hughes takes you through an unbelievable adventure. It sets in the future, you wouldn't beleive what you're reading, but you won't stop. Each page takes you to a higher level of beleiving. I read it a year ago and it was one out of a very small number of books that impressed me. So if you you like future fantasies, you will definetly love this book.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Unnecessary - and uninspired - retread This is basically a rehash of themes from Hughes' earlier 'Invitation to the Game'. Lacking the original's strong characterization and vivid plot twists, though, this disorganized new version manages to feel underplotted and overwritten - and hence intensely frustrating - at the same time. Readers attracted by the concept should be redirected to the far more compelling 'Game'.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Different The Other Place was the first Monica Hughes book I ever read. I thought it was really good. A girl named Alison is taken from her house in the middle of the night by the world government and trapped in a dome. It isn't until her brother escapes and they find a place called Xanadu that she really understands what's going on. Girls and Boys ages 12 - 15.
