Howard Pyle (Mar 5, 1853 – Nov 9, 1911) was an American illustrator and author. In 1894 he began teaching illustration at the Drexel Institute. On the verge of twentieth century, he has founded his own school of art. His classic publication of The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood remains in print up to date due to its popularity. He published his first novel, Otto of the Silver Hand, in 1888. He also illustrated historical and adventure stories for papers and magazines
Otto of the Silver Hand is a children's novel by Howard Pyle. The story is set in the Dark Ages and revolves around Otto, Baron Conrad’s son. His life began with a great misfortune - his mother died on labour, when she saw her husband’s battle wounds. She made Conrad promise to raise their son in monastery. But when Otto reached the age of eleven, his father took him back to his castle. A now young boy had to learn the ways of German lords and barons, for one he will inherit the title and land of his father.
