We might expect an appearance of Isaiah rather than Elijah; but Elijah was the typical prophet, and the Jews expected his appearing (cf. Wetstein on Mt 178). The other peculiar detail in Luke, that 'Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep,' may well seem confirmatory of the view (?,f.) of Weiss and Beyschlag, that the scene was presented to the three apostles in divinely caused vision. § 51. vi. The Prophecies of Death and Resurrection.--The period we are describing is a kind of water-shed, which marks not only the summit of the ascent but the beginning of the descent. We have seen how this was the case with the enthusiasm of the multitude: it was also the case with Christ Himself. The confession of St. Peter was immediately followed, and the Transfiguration both preceded and followed, by distinct prophecies of the fatal end which was to close His ministry--an end fatal in the eyes of men, but soon to be cancelled by His resurrection.
