“Overdressed does for T-shirts and leggings what Fast Food Nation did for burgers and fries.”
—Katha Pollitt
Cheap fashion has fundamentally changed the way most Americans dress. Stores ranging from discounters like Target to traditional chains like JCPenny now offer the newest trends at unprecedentedly low prices. And we have little reason to keep wearing and repairing the clothes we already own when styles change so fast and it’s cheaper to just buy more.
Cline sets out to uncover the true nature of the cheap fashion juggernaut. What are we doing with all these cheap clothes? And more important, what are they doing to us, our society, our environment, and our economic well-being?
Elizabeth L. Cline has written for AMCtv.com, The Daily Beast, New York, The Etsy Blog, Popular Science, The New Republic, The Village Voice and seedmagazine.com. She lives in Brooklyn, New York. Visit www.overdressedthebook.com

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Educational and entertaining read I have zero interest in fashion but found this book very informative and an enjoyable read. A perfect blend of facts and stories makes it easy to absorb the author's message. I expected it to focus a lot on sweatshops but there is a great balance on topics such as DIY, thrift shopping, the history of the fashion industry, environmental concerns etc. This book really inspired me to do a lot more research on any future clothing purchases, learn to do basic sewing, and teach myself how to recognize quality clothing. This book reminds me of the phrase "you don't know what you don't know." It really opened my eyes to many aspects of the fashion industry that I was completely unaware of. Excellent read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must read If you're looking to learn more about the eco, moral and financial cost of fashion I would recommend picking up Overdressed. I enjoyed it and found it to be a good mix of facts & figures alongside personal stories and tales of the author's investigation. What I particularly liked about Overdressed is that along with discussing the negatives, the author gave equal attention to companies who were making a change and trying to produce eco-friendly clothing at fair wages and in safer conditions. Chapters 5 and 8 were my favourite chapters due to my own interest in thrift shopping, DIY and refashioning. I was delighted to see the author discuss what process thrift stores use for the sorting and distributing of clothes for that was especially educational.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everybody Should Read This Book Ever wonder where your clothes come from? Ever wonder who makes them? Cline's book gives insight into the unsettling dark side of fast fashion. After reading this book, I have cut back my shopping drastically and started shopping for locally-made fashion. Truly one of the most important fashion books I have read thus far.

Editorial Reviews

“Cline is the Michael Pollan of fashion…Hysterical levels of sartorial consumption are terrible for the environment, for workers, and even, ironically, for the way we look.”—Michelle Goldberg, Newsweek/The Daily Beast“How did Americans end up with closets crammed with flimsy, ridiculously cheap garments? Elizabeth Cline travels the world to trace the rise of fast fashion and its cost in human misery, environmental damage, and common sense.”—Katha Pollitt, columnist for The Nation“Overdressed is eye-opening and definitely turns retailing on its head. Cline’s insightful book reveals the serious problems facing our industry today. The tremendous values and advantages of domestic production are often ignored in favor of a price point that makes clothing disposable.” —Erica Wolf, executive director, Save the Garment Center
