Gentle, or wise, or kindly, in whose hand Falls this rude portrait; take it not for dream, Fashioned by fancy, of some distant land: But actual portrait; such as portraits seem, Wherein some keen-eyed artist long has planned To pour through every feature natural gleam. Many traditions, curiously perplext, Have yielded grain for my elaborate text. This be assured, that if Glendower had seemed Angel or saint, of more than earthly mould; Had from his sharp sword red blood never streamed; And were his type a statue, calmly cold; Or had for ever on his banner gleamed Victory, with most men arbitress of power;--So would I gladly have portrayed Glendower. Or had he been vainglorious, as are styled Those for whose lip vain fable coins the speech; Or else mere savage, and unreconciled By lettered arts, which gentle manners teach; Or had he e'er betrayed man, woman, child, Or e'er deserted friend within his reach;--Unsparing would have been my record then; Else turned from one unworthy of my pen. But since I found him veriest man of men; Brave, modest, loyal, after all his light, And scholar, more than savage, in his ken; Nor yet, when stung to vindicate the right, Provoked to swerve from what seemed righteous then, But slow to anger; yet unequal fight Enduring, first with England and her spears, Next with her tongues resounding through the years. Therefore he seemed to me not all unlike Pontius,--that hero of the Samnite race,--Or mightier Hannibal, whose skill could strike So perilous strokes at Roman pride of place. Such men must bear, whate'er intense dislike From frightened Pride can forge, to wreak disgrace; Till rumours, born of panic, and of rage, Creep into chronicles of rugged age.
