The senior pupils of St Peter's High School are on retreat to a secluded outdoor activity centre, coming to terms with the murder of a fellow pupil through the means you would expect: counselling, contemplation, candid discussion and even prayer - not to mention booze, drugs, clandestine liaisons and as much partying as they can get away with.

Not so far away, the commanders of a top-secret military experiment, long-since spiralled out of control, fear they may have literally unleashed the forces of Hell.

Two very different worlds are on a collision course, and will clash in an earthly battle between science and the supernatural, philosophy and faith, civilisation and savagery.

The bookies are offering evens.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Turgid & Sophomoric It wasn't until 70% through that this story got going. Then a brief flurry of action and a (spoiler alert!) pseudo-profound moralistic denouement. Don't waste your money and time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from New favourite author *Warning - Spoiler Alert* Just finished Pandaemonium! Awesome story by Scottish author, Christopher Brookmyre, involving Catholic school kids on a weekend retreat at a camp in northern Scotland, which turns out to be near a decommissioned Cold War military base, since taken over by the US military, now with the Vatican in charge, after scientists unintentionally opened a portal to another dimension through which demons emerged into the Scottish highlands. Madness, chaos and carnage ensues. Funny s#*t gets said along the way. Belief systems are challenged, torn down, built back up and torn back down again, and people become generally better people in the whole messy process. It was a fun read! This being the third of his I've read, I officially love this author. And apparently he's been publishing this stuff since 1997, and no one told me?! Highly recommend checking him out if you enjoy warped, witty, bizarrely crafted and highly imaginative fiction! Enjoy.
