In early life he took up the study of telegraphy and was employed as an operator until 1874. He regarded this merely as an initial step to higher things, and, taking up the study of law, was admitted to the bar in the year in which he attained his majority. He then entered upon active practice, in which he has since been engaged save for intervals spent in editorial work and upon the public platform. Along with those qualities indispensable to the lawyer--a keen, rapid, logical mind plus the business sense, and a ready capacity for hard work-- he brought to the starting point of his legal career certain rare gifts--eloquence of language and a strong personality.
