about

Part of Penguin's beautiful hardback Clothbound Classics series, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith, these delectable and collectible editions are bound in high-quality colourful, tactile cloth with foil stamped into the design. At twenty-seven, Anne Elliot is no longer young and has few romantic prospects. Eight years earlier, she had been persuaded by her friend Lady Russell to break off her engagement to Frederick Wentworth, a handsome naval captain with neither fortunenor rank. What happens when they encounter each other again is movingly told in Jane Austen's last completed novel. Set in the fashionable societies of Lyme Regis and Bath, Persuasion is a brilliant satire of vanity and pretension, but, above all,it is a love story tinged with the heartache of missed opportunities.

She was born in Steventon rectory on 16th December 1775. Her family later moved to Bath and then to Chawton in Hampshire. She wrote from a young ...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Another Austen classic. A lesser know classic by Austen but in my opinion, one of her best and more mature story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great read I am addicted to these clothbound classics; they look great on my shelf. And of course Austen is a must-read for all. I find this one a bit of an acquired taste; it's a bit different from her others, but have still read it multiple times.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It was okay. I liked the main character and the romance. However most of the book's plot and pacing fell flat for me. The most interesting part for me was near the end.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Edition for Classic Literature I cannot rave enough about Penguin's re-releases of classic novels with this beautiful typography. They look amazing on a shelf and are simply beautiful. This novel is a must read for everyone. Jane Austen is one of the greatest female authors throughout history and this book is no exception. Her social commentary is smart, witty and sharp. While Persuasion is not one of her more well known novels, it stands out as an elegant piece of writing and a great read. #plumreview

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It was o.k. 3.25 stars Anne Elliot was in love with Frederick Wentworth, but because he was “below” her in social status, her family convinced her not to marry him. A number of years later, they cross paths again, and Anne still loves him. But does he still love her? I am having a hard time writing a review. I wanted to like this one, I like the premise. The book was ok, but my mind wandered more than I would have liked. My favourites by Austen are P&P and Northanger Abbey. My least favourite is Emma. This one comes in near the bottom for me (but just a little better than Emma). I've read enough by Austen that I know her style of writing. It's not action-packed or anything, so I maybe I wasn't in the mood for it?

Editorial Reviews

“Critics, especially [recently], value Persuasion highly, as the author’s ‘most deeply felt fiction,’ ‘the novel which in the end the experienced reader of Jane Austen puts at the head of the list.’ . . . Anne wins back Wentworth and wins over the reader; we may, like him, end up thinking Anne’s character ‘perfection itself.’” –from the Introduction by Judith Terry
