Rated 5 out of 5 by from The beginning of a great series The series is incredible an this was the book that started it all. Comparable to the likes of Harry Potter (however, still not surpassing Rowling's genius), this is a great book for children and adults alike. Filled with adventure, magic, and an interesting twist on mythology, this is a must read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I enjoyed this book as an older reader As a mainly adult fantasy reader I picked up this series because I never did as a younger reader and always hear so much about it! Although this is middle grade fantasy I really enjoyed the story and there is good humour in it as well.Quick and easy read, I will be continuing the series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Childhood <3 I will always love this series from the ends of the earth and back. Rick was such an important author for me, and he still is, I'm almost 20 years old now and I'm still reading his books, laughing with his characters and admiring the beautiful covers (because seriously, they're so pretty). I have 3 copies of this book actually, I have the original first edition, the softcover movie tie-in cover, and I just got the new covers, because like I said, they're gorgeous. I loved growing up alongside these characters, at least I sort-of did? I've had a crush on Grover since I was 14 to which he was 16 at the time I think, and in the new Trials Of Apollo book, the Burning Maze, Grover is only 17??? LIKE,,, what the heck Rick. It's obviously easy to forget that all of the Camp Half-Blood books are happening on a shorter time-line. In book time, every single book takes place a week after each other, but in real time, a book is released every year, lol. The books are worth a read, I consider them the Harry Potter series of my generation, Rick totally is the J.K Rowling of my generation (even though we all still love the Harry Potter series deeply) you know what I mean. 10/5 Stars

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fun, simple read This book is written more for young aged readers, it is classified as a middle grade book, but it is still an enjoyable book for reader that are older. Some parts I did feel came off as a little juvenile particularly the action scenes, but I do love Greek mythology and how it was not such a complicated and over the top adventure book, it was simple but really fun.
Date published: 2018-05-28
Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favourite series If you love Greek Mythology and sassy main characters this is the series for you. The writing style is quite fun and brings a modern approach (and easily accessible) to mythology. Don't watch the movies - they're terrible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like Harry Potter, But Better! A heroic tale of a 12 year old going on a quest to save his mother and Olympus. Tastefully incorporates Greek mythology. An awesome read for anyone, but especially for children and teens.
Date published: 2018-04-04
Rated 4 out of 5 by from So Much Fun! I picked up the entire Percy Jackson box set on a whim when I saw it on sale and decided to give it a try. It's a middle grade book, but like Harry Potter anyone can enjoy it. I loved it! It definitely had some similarities to Harry Potter, but it's also totally different. Percy has always gotten in trouble as a kid by events that seem to be completely outside of his control, but just keep happening to him. He's been diagnosed with ADHD and dislexia and has been expelled from a dozen schools. When he's in the 6th grade, mythical creatures start showing up everywhere and attacking him and he suddenly finds himself dropped off at Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demi-gods. That's right, Percy, along with all the other kids at the camp, are half-blood children of the Greek Gods. Around the 6th grade the monsters start becoming aware of their power and attacking the kids, so they are transported to Camp Half-Blood to train to defend themselves against monsters. Percy doesn't know who his father is, but it pretty quickly becomes obvious and he is asked to go on a quest to recover Zeus' master bolt, which has been stolen, and return it to him before the solstice, only 10 days away. Percy accepts the quest and heads off on adventure with his school chums Annabeth and Grover and gets into a whole lot more trouble along the way. First of all, Rick Riordan's writing is great! It is hilarious and I couldn't help but chuckle to myself from the first chapter onwards. Harry Potter has humour in it, but it has a more serious tone, which is what I was expecting from Percy Jackson, but this was definitely the funnier read and had humorous elements throughout the entire story. That's not to say it didn't have action, it definitely had a ton of action. Percy seems to go from one bad situation to the next and you can't trust anyone he meets. I really liked both Annabeth and Grover. Annabeth is the daughter of Athena and is a bit of a brainiac and Grover is a Satyr who likes to eat tin cans and provides even more comic relief throughout the story (also, his name is Grover, LOL). Emotionally, I don't think this had a whole lot of depth, but it's the first of 5 books, so I'm expecting a lot more character development in subsequent books and a bit of a darker story line, although please stay funny! I probably won't get to the rest of the books for a while as I have a million other things on my TBR I want to read, but I think these are quick books I'll pick up whenever I'm in the mood for a laugh! I wish I'd had these when I was a middle grader!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Percy Jackson is related to the Gods?! Percy Jackson is whisked away to Camp Half-Blood after learning that he is connected to the Greek gods, and what follows is a wondrous, charming, and action-packed adventure readers young and old will adore!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gateway to reading As someone who grew up with ADHD and dyslexia, it was phenomenal to read a book where I could see my younger self reflected in the characters. Now that I work in a school, I recommend this book to all my LD kids and it is wonderful to see them light up and really enjoy reading. Amazing series.

I found myself reading it in class, at lunch, anywhere, until I could finish it. After reading this, I was hooked on all of Rick's books, and have a special love for them to this very day. It's been almost 7 years since the day I discovered this book and I don't regret it one bit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This Novel Has it ALL !! Highly Recommend! Honestly, this entire series has been on my to be read list for it seems...forever. I was hooked from the first page. Percy's voice is so present and it felt like the entire time he was telling this story to me directly. Now I will admit, I watched this movies years and years ago. I didn't really like them, and I didn't remember much of anything that happened. So luckily for me, nothing was really spoiled. I loved the action and adventure that was weaved into this story. I feel like Percy is just a regular teenager and that is what is so relate-able. He isn't huge and strong, Or brainy beyond belief. This entire story seems like it could be real, and I just love that magical feeling. This is definitely a novel I will encourage everyone to read. I love Camp Half-Blood. I loved Annabeth and Grover. There were several laugh out loud moments I had while reading this novel. I can't wait to see what happens next to these characters. Absolutely addicted to this world already and these characters. Cannot wait to dive into book two of this world.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very interesting and fun to learn about Greek Mythology This is a teen book, but I'm still enjoying it. It's written well, but it's a fast read for an adult. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyed it This book was so much better than the movie. While I'm not ready to dive into the next book yet, I -did- buy the box set so that when I'm ready to go back to this world it's there. Enjoyable book, and would recommend. The only reason why I'm rating 4 instead of 5 is because I'm not feeling like I -have- to read the next book, while an enjoyable read it wasn't 100% captivating.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Sad I didn't enjoyed this I am kind of frustrated I feel this way about this book. I had a hard time finishing it. I saw the movie first and I suspect it plays a lot in the fact that I don't care as much as I would like about the first novel of the Percy Jackson series. Of course, I will give The Sea of Monsters a chance. Part of my enjoyment was ruined by the fact that I knew the ending to The Lightning Thief. I don't think the story has a lot of depth. And I didn't like the characters nor their humour. This whole prophecy thing got me yawning. I hope the second book gets me more excited about Percy's adventures, because I remember LOVING the movie.

Date published: 2017-09-07
Rated 4 out of 5 by from I liked it I liked it, but it feels sort of over hyped. Not necessarily in a bad way, but with all the hype, I expected better. However, I can see why the movies didn't work out because they were quite drastically different to the books. If I wrote a book series and the first movie or movies turned out drastically different, I'd probably scrap the project too. Or hire a new director who would follow the book more closely.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrendous I love children's literature! Sometimes I'm happiest when I'm reading a children's book. But Percy Jackson represents most of the things that children's literature does wrong such as the constant employment of over-simplified, colloquial language (ex. "My shield was the size of a professional basketball backboard. It must have weighed a million pounds!"). I understand that children don't have the vocabulary that teenagers or adults have but books can still have the musical rhythm and occasional difficult word that blends prose and poetry. Read Kathryn Lasky's "Wolves of the Beyond" series and you'll notice the astounding elevation in literary quality even thought it is a popular work of fiction! Rick Riordan's first Percy Jackson novel is a novel that pretends to be creative by using ancient Greek mythology to appeal to a wider audience. There is nothing original going on here because the process for Riordan was clearly formulaic: Use Greek mythology in the context of a pre-teen, half-God. He doesn't bend or twist the rules. Every single event which occurs in Greek myth is taken literally in Percy's universe. The prose is dry but the lesser of three evils when you consider internal and social dialogue. Riordan's inability to incorporate any level of emotion in a failed attempt at tragedy is laughable. Quite frankly, this novel is a poor-excuse for one that fails on almost every level. I would recommend this book to younger children just to pique their interest in Greek mythology in a way that's more relatable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Childhood Favourite This book was the gateway to my love of reading and mythology. Riordan uses an exciting adventure with lovable, relatable characters to teach readers of the epic and occasionally confusing stories of Greek mythology. I ate up all his stories for many years and learnt a great ton in that time. I developed a new appreciation for mythology at a young age. I think this book is extrememly valuable for young readers and that they'll enjoy every bit of the series!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great start to the series I loved Percy Jackson when I was younger, so when I saw the boxset on sale for $20, I thought, why not? This was a good first book, which introduced us to the overall arch but also gave us a fun little quest. I remember when I went to see the movie, I couldn't believe everything they had done to ruin the chance for any sequels. If you have watched the movie, I recommend forgetting it and reading the books instead. They might feel a little dated with their pop culture references, but they're still quite fun, and a good way to learn the basics of Greek Mythology. I will definitely be continuing my re-read soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun for the Family! I first picked this book up a number of years ago to read on my own. I have more recently finished reading it to my oldest son (10), who enjoyed it immensely. The characters are very likable, the story is a lot of fun, and it's so interesting to see Riordan's perspective on how the Greek gods interact with our modern world. My son and I are working our way through the series and it has been a wonderful time for both of us. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something entertaining to read to their children (or themselves)!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favourite series! I was introduced to this book when I was in middle school because our teacher had assigned it to us. I thought I wouldn't like it because I never enjoyed any of the books my teachers recommended, but this book blew me away. I loved the book so much that I got hooked on the entire series and it has now become my favourite! There are a variety of different characters in this series and they are all so well-written and lovable! I've always loved Greek mythology and this series just amplified that love! I think it's great for all ages and I would recommend this book to everyone I know! #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I love anything to do with Greek mythology! I'll admit it, I watched the movie first ... sorry! I loved it so much though that I had to read the book, and I enjoyed it a lot. I love how different it was, because it was like I was learning the story for the first time. I was able to fall in love with the movie and still fall in love with the book without hating the movie later ... if that makes any sense.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Strong Start To A Groundbreaking Series No matter how many times I read these books, I always find something new inside the pages. The story is always fresh and new and exciting, and it feels as though I'm undertaking the quests and adventures for the very first time. The characters are memorable - in a way that they stick with you after you've closed the book and never quite leave your heart in the time to come. Percy Jackson's tales combine into what is easily one of my favorite series.
