Rated 2 out of 5 by from Sad I didn't enjoyed this I am kind of frustrated I feel this way about this book. I had a hard time finishing it. I saw the movie first and I suspect it plays a lot in the fact that I don't care as much as I would like about the first novel of the Percy Jackson series. Of course, I will give The Sea of Monsters a chance. Part of my enjoyment was ruined by the fact that I knew the ending to The Lightning Thief. I don't think the story has a lot of depth. And I didn't like the characters nor their humour. This whole prophecy thing got me yawning. I hope the second book gets me more excited about Percy's adventures, because I remember LOVING the movie.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I liked it I liked it, but it feels sort of over hyped. Not necessarily in a bad way, but with all the hype, I expected better. However, I can see why the movies didn't work out because they were quite drastically different to the books. If I wrote a book series and the first movie or movies turned out drastically different, I'd probably scrap the project too. Or hire a new director who would follow the book more closely.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Book Is Amazing Every Time You Read It #plumreview I first read the first Percy Jackson series in elementary school, and even all these years later, I'm still in love with it. Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrendous I love children's literature! Sometimes I'm happiest when I'm reading a children's book. But Percy Jackson represents most of the things that children's literature does wrong such as the constant employment of over-simplified, colloquial language (ex. "My shield was the size of a professional basketball backboard. It must have weighed a million pounds!"). I understand that children don't have the vocabulary that teenagers or adults have but books can still have the musical rhythm and occasional difficult word that blends prose and poetry. Read Kathryn Lasky's "Wolves of the Beyond" series and you'll notice the astounding elevation in literary quality even thought it is a popular work of fiction! Rick Riordan's first Percy Jackson novel is a novel that pretends to be creative by using ancient Greek mythology to appeal to a wider audience. There is nothing original going on here because the process for Riordan was clearly formulaic: Use Greek mythology in the context of a pre-teen, half-God. He doesn't bend or twist the rules. Every single event which occurs in Greek myth is taken literally in Percy's universe. The prose is dry but the lesser of three evils when you consider internal and social dialogue. Riordan's inability to incorporate any level of emotion in a failed attempt at tragedy is laughable. Quite frankly, this novel is a poor-excuse for one that fails on almost every level. I would recommend this book to younger children just to pique their interest in Greek mythology in a way that's more relatable.
Date published: 2017-07-17
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Childhood Favourite This book was the gateway to my love of reading and mythology. Riordan uses an exciting adventure with lovable, relatable characters to teach readers of the epic and occasionally confusing stories of Greek mythology. I ate up all his stories for many years and learnt a great ton in that time. I developed a new appreciation for mythology at a young age. I think this book is extrememly valuable for young readers and that they'll enjoy every bit of the series!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great start to the series I loved Percy Jackson when I was younger, so when I saw the boxset on sale for $20, I thought, why not? This was a good first book, which introduced us to the overall arch but also gave us a fun little quest. I remember when I went to see the movie, I couldn't believe everything they had done to ruin the chance for any sequels. If you have watched the movie, I recommend forgetting it and reading the books instead. They might feel a little dated with their pop culture references, but they're still quite fun, and a good way to learn the basics of Greek Mythology. I will definitely be continuing my re-read soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun for the Family! I first picked this book up a number of years ago to read on my own. I have more recently finished reading it to my oldest son (10), who enjoyed it immensely. The characters are very likable, the story is a lot of fun, and it's so interesting to see Riordan's perspective on how the Greek gods interact with our modern world. My son and I are working our way through the series and it has been a wonderful time for both of us. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something entertaining to read to their children (or themselves)!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favourite series! I was introduced to this book when I was in middle school because our teacher had assigned it to us. I thought I wouldn't like it because I never enjoyed any of the books my teachers recommended, but this book blew me away. I loved the book so much that I got hooked on the entire series and it has now become my favourite! There are a variety of different characters in this series and they are all so well-written and lovable! I've always loved Greek mythology and this series just amplified that love! I think it's great for all ages and I would recommend this book to everyone I know! #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I love anything to do with Greek mythology! I'll admit it, I watched the movie first ... sorry! I loved it so much though that I had to read the book, and I enjoyed it a lot. I love how different it was, because it was like I was learning the story for the first time. I was able to fall in love with the movie and still fall in love with the book without hating the movie later ... if that makes any sense.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Strong Start To A Groundbreaking Series No matter how many times I read these books, I always find something new inside the pages. The story is always fresh and new and exciting, and it feels as though I'm undertaking the quests and adventures for the very first time. The characters are memorable - in a way that they stick with you after you've closed the book and never quite leave your heart in the time to come. Percy Jackson's tales combine into what is easily one of my favorite series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Can't Believe I Waited So Long To Read This! Let's talk about the world building! This book is filled with little Easter eggs for all of you Greek and Roman mythology lovers - my inner nerdiness was squealing throughout the book! But even if you're completely new to all of this, Rick Riordan does an excellent job of quickly summarizing the stories of the different gods and heroes. I loved how the seat of Zeus' power follows wherever the height of western civilization is! It's honestly such a unique concept and makes so much sense based off of classical history. I also loved how places like Olympus and the Underworld are hidden right in front of all the humans! It reminded me of Harry Potter and Hogwarts and the Ministry of Magic :) As for the characters, I loved all of them! Grover was me in the literal and practical sense. I mean who doesn't dream about food? Annabeth was just a perfect character - strong, ambitious, intelligent. Percy was absolutely hilarious! I love how he challenges authority and isn't afraid to speak his mind. They're an excellent trio and do kind of remind me of Harry, Ron and Hermione but in a good, warm feeling way! Not sure what else to say. I wasn't totally expecting the ending - I love when a book can surprise you! I've seen the movie, but I think I blocked it all out because it's literally the WORST BOOK TO MOVIE ADAPTATION EVER CREATED! They skipped a whole section of the book and messed a whole lot of the characters and it just sucked! But let's not talk about that.
Date published: 2017-01-17
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A book for all ages What a wonderful book! I read this as an adult for a children's literature class in college, and it did not disappoint! I would recommend this book for all ages, specifically those with a more whimsical side

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Percy is definitely a vibrant character Way better than the movie, love the incorporation of Greek mythology in modern time. How they alter certain myths and characteristics of the Greek gods to fit today's setting gives more depth and entertainment value to the book. It has it's own unique quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun Read Great read! The first book in the Percy Jackson series. Percy is a funny and unlikely (but certainly likeable) hero. Very relatable for some children has he has ADHD - but this becomes an advantage, of sorts. He thrust into the world of Camp Half Blood, comprising of children who are half god, half person. A fish out of water, adventure tale - think Harry Potter. Worth the read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classic I feel like this series should be a classic children's read, as it contains some really contents. The action will sweep you off your feet as you learn about the life of Percy Jackson, son of a Greek God and a mortal mother. The characters are developed really well, and this is a really good way to start the series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great start to an adventurous series! Percy Jackson starts off in this novel as knowing very little about his past. This book was such an epic adventure and I recommend the whole series to anyone. The only fault is I wish these books were around when I was younger (I would have appreciated them more) as they are intended for a younger audience but can be enjoyed by all ages. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Memorable I absolutely adore the Percy Jackson series. I've read the series quite a few times and I love it more and more. Riordan writes in a style that is relatable and fun for young readers. I find the character development in this book to be very good. Also Riordan does an exceptional job at integrating Greek mythology perfectly into modern life. As someone who loves mythology I couldn't help but just love this book. Percy is funny, brave, loyal, and sarcastic. All the traits to make this book better. Definitely recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better Than I Expected I had heard about this series before I picked up the book and I thought it was just going to be a copy of Harry Potter. I was actually excited when I realised that it wasn't. Instead, it was about a boy with ADHD and dyslexia facing monsters that are from Greek Mythology.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great start to a series Percy Jackson, what can I really say. This book is one of my personal favs. I am a fan of mythology and this book hits the spot. I'm going to right out put this book into a five star rating. You can definitely tell Rick Riordan did his homework. He integrated Greek mythology very well into the story. The characters were so well developed and went well with the book. I liked Percy, Grover and Anabeth's personallities. However, the author did go a little overboard on how much Grover was a scaredy cat. Mind my choice in words please. The thesaurus is in the other room and my chair is so comfortable. I was impressed and enjoyed this read. However, obviously this is quite a light read. So if your looking for something more "adultish" this would not be your style. But if your into fantasy then this is a book that you should pick up. It was fast paced in my opinion. I did not get bored reading this. In fact I was excited to know what was going to happen next with every turn of the page. The cover did seem a little simple and gave more of a childish feeling to the book. But the story followed through with action and adventure that made it easy to follow and fun to read. Personally, five stars to this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great I was obsessed with these books for the longest time, and the great thing about them is that there's so many, and you learn a lot when you're reading them. It's just really great, and I will always hold these books close to my heart. It's a slow start at first, but it gets really good. Do NOT base any of your opinions of the book based on the movie, the movie was wildly inaccurate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hilarious yet educational I love this book for the chapter titles alone, sometimes I will literally just sit there and read the table of contents. This is simple, very funny and the perfect reading level for young boys who hate books. Don't let them watch the movie, it's not the same. What really impresses me was also the accuracy of the mythology that Rick Riordan uses. Unlike for example Marvel's Thor, any reference to mythology (outside of the modern fictional demigods) are all accurate accounts of real greek mythology simplified for the understanding of middle school kids. But don't think it's just for kids, I'm in University and still love reading these books, and I personally find them even better than Harry Potter (not the movies, I repeat, not the movies!)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from for older kids This book is made of bad quality paper – grey and thin, and very small print too with big margins around the page. I would not recommend it for kids under 10 y/o who are looking for an easy enjoyment of reading. Though, the book itself is interesting

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best since Harry Potter! Ever since I finished my adventures at Hogwarts I have been looking for the next great story and here it is! Percy Jackson brings together an amazing unlikely hero and amazing Greek elements to deliver a one of a kind series that keeps you guessing until the end. The Lightning Thief is an amazing read and Riordan's spin on Greek Mythology is seriously captivating!

It quickly became my favourite series with its relatable humour and an introduction to greek mythology which doesn't feel forced. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really enjoyed this Percy Jackson is a regular kid in grade 6, except that he seems to constantly be getting into trouble and kicked out of his schools. Little does he know, but he will soon find out, that his father is a god. Once he discovers this, for his own safety, he ends up at Camp Half-Blood, where he will train and possibly even go on a quest. I really liked this. Yes, it's similar to Harry Potter, as the main character turns 12 and suddenly learns something supernatural about himself. But, that's ok. It's still a lot of fun, and of course, bringing the mythological characters to life is also enjoyable. I will definitely be picking up the next book in the series at some point.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic book! This book was was full of action, thrills and romance.i absolutely love books with romance and characters with special powers. Also I liked this book because it was funny and I like Greek gods. I find them very interesting. I think anyone with an interest in adventure and fantasy would love this book. For the age group though, I would recommend this book for more advanced readers because most of the Greek words were harder to pronounce then others. This book had an interesting problem and I liked how everything tied together at the end. If I would to rate this book I would give five stars. *****

Rated 4 out of 5 by from "The Lightning Thief, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" This book is about a young boy, Percy Jackson that just got kicked out of another boarding school. Lately, mythological monsters have been threatening him and trying to kill him. They seem to be walking out of Percy's mythological textbook. All this leads Percy to a place he doesn't belong. Zeus's master lightning bolt has been stolen and Percy is the main suspect. To get his name of the list, he has to find the real thief. He has only 10 days for him and his friends to return the bolt to Zeus. Not only he has to find the thief, but he must come to reason with his father who abandoned him when he was young. Here is my review of Percy Jackson, The Lightning Thief... My rating out of 5 is: 4 Stars The reason I love this book so much is that it's interesting, creative and unique. It even relates to Greek Mythology. Also, the book had great characters, it's easy to understand and it was really well written. The only two things I don't like about the book is that they don't express Percy's feeling sometimes and they added freaky and unnecessary parts to the book. People who would like this book are those who like Greek mythology, originality and freaky books. This book really expresses never giving up. It shows that when your at tough times, you just got to finish it and move on. My final rating out of 5 is: 4 Stars

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book I liked Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the lightning thief because the book was very suspenseful and it was so interesting that I had a hard time putting the book down. My favourite part was when Percy figured out who stole Zeus’s master bolt and Hades’s helm of darkness. It was also really funny and action-packed. Although the movie was nothing like the book I’d have to say I enjoyed the book a little more than the movie because it was a little more interesting and it had more funny parts. It surprised me the most when Percy figured out who he is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding This book is in perspective of Perseus Jackson, son of Poseidon. He discovers who his true friends are and why he is so different then all of his classmates. He goes on a quest to retrieve Zeus' Lightning Bolt with Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood. Together they face many challenges along the way.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Rough start, but gets better in the series. About Percy and his troubled past and his challenges of dyslexia and ADHD where he find out that he is a half-bood (no, not a vampire) more like a godling. He is on the run, until he is safe at Half-Blood Hill or though he thought. He takes Annabeth and Grover on his quest to find out what is going on. Follow him as he searches for items on his quest and battles monsters. (from a 10-year-old perspective - kewl adventures ... adult perspective - lacking a bit in storyline) Overall, good read and entertaining

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Book I hate to admit, but I saw the movie first which I thought was decent. Then a friend said that the book was much better (aren't they always?) so I went and picked it up. I thought this was a great children's book! A light, quick adventure with enough depth and character development to appeal to kids and adults alike. Although other reviews have compared it to Harry Potter I feel that although similar, this book is distinct. If I were to do a HP comparison I would first say that this book contains many 'scary' adventures but lacks the serious undertones of death/racism/etc that are found in HP. I feel that makes this book suitable for younger kids for which the HP series might be too 'dark'. On the flip side to this is that it may be enjoyed less by an adult audience since it is less complex. This is not really a criticism, just a comment on reader age group. I would high recommend this book to both kids and adults! In fact I may be picking up the next book in the series on a future trip to the bookstore.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly recommended! I really don’t think I give kids enough credit. When I started reading The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan I was amazed at how scary it was – and it was labeled as a children’s book! Right off the bat, Percy Jackson, a kid at Yancy Academy vaporizes one of his teachers and then is told that that teacher never did exist. He also reiterates a story from Greek mythology about the king titan Kronos who eats his kids, not believing they are gods – seems scary to me! There is violence and subject matter that may not be suitable for certain ages (family violence, even Greek mythology in general), but I really enjoyed reading this fast-paced novel. There is humor mixed throughout (similar to The 6th Grade Nickname Game) and you can’t help but fall in love with the characters. Fans of the Harry Potter series will love this book. To me, even though the majority of the main characters are 12-years-old, it feels almost more grown up than the Harry Potter books. Being a person who took Greek mythology in university, I appreciated all of the stories of the Gods and actually checked to see if I still had my textbook from the class. Reading just the first novel in this series has peaked my interest in the subject again. But don’t get me wrong – there are definite similarities between the Percy Jackson and The Olympians series and the Harry Potter series, but it’s all part of the genre. In a book like this for kids, a boy will have his friends and he has to go somewhere to hone his talents. This is far from being the spitting image of Harry Potter and I think with it’s references to Greek mythology, it might interest a few more readers. After reading so many negative reviews from people saying that Rick Riordan copied the Harry Potter books, I just have to say that I knew nothing about these books when I bought them. In fact, if it wasn’t for my husband giving me some money as a bribe for me to take the dog to the vet, I probably would never have bought them. As it turns out, I stopped by Wal Mart and had seen this series on display and thought they might be interesting. I didn’t even know there was a movie made about them. For the record, I loved the Harry Potter books and I am loving this series as well. Just take the many books that are out in the vampire genre nowadays – they all have many similarities but there are good ones and bad ones. As a reader, you have to be able to read a book for the sake of not comparing it to another book. Isn’t that what a love of reading is all about? In fact (and I’m almost done here), I read a passage by Riordan about the similarities between these two series’ of books and he’s really just following the patterns that have been set up for a lot of books written for children in the past. From that, it’s easy to see how there will always be similarities in children’s books – it’s just that the most popular one of the time will be the comparison book, rather than the first of its genre. (As a sidenote to books, I’m a musician who plays the piano and sings – do you know how many times I’m compared to people like Tori Amos? Or basically any female singer-songwriter who uses a piano? When, really, it was Kate Bush that pretty much started the whole thing – NOT Tori. But I digress.) I highly recommend this series and I can’t wait to read more books written by Riordan!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! I've read this book for a while now. Now I get to write a review! I first checked this book out from the library and then didn't touch it again until the day before it was due. I regretted it immensely. I was hooked from the first few pages. I ran to the bookstore and bought it. It's funny and everything about it is enjoyable. The Greek mythology worked well and Rick Riordan made it interesting. Percy is an extremely likable character. Annabeth and Grover too. I definitely recommend this series. It never gets boring and will leave you wanting more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic! Great for Greek myth buffs. A wonderful coming of age story about a young boy named Percy Jackson who turns out to be the son of Poseidon. The gods exist, and Zeus is really p.o'd because his lightening bolt has gone missing. And due to a ban on the three brother gods to not have any more children after WWII and the law that no god can take what belongs to another, naturally Zeus assumes his brother Poseidon had one of his demigod children take the bolt in an attempted power play. So young Percy Jackson is hounded by gods and monsters before he even knows who he is. That was quite the wake up as you can well imagine. But aided by his trusty friend Grover (who was WAY more awesome in the movie) and Annabeth, daughter of Athena, Percy is off to find the bolt, return it to Olympus, and clear his name. Fun times. Wonderfully paced, the story doesn't run so fast that you miss out on anything, nor are you bored. The writer did fantastic research for this novel, he was even able to tie the three ages of the Olympians into the story. My favorite part though was the idea that Olympus moves around in sync with the center of western civilization. Greece was once the center, it is where western civilization was born. But now the United States and Canada are considered the center, so Olympus has moved here, and the gods with it. Fascinating idea, it makes the story uniquely Riordan's. And aside from Grover, the book is 10x better than the movie.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I should have read this sooner! Seriously, why did I not begin reading this book earlier? I heard the series was popular and when the movie was released in theaters, I really enjoyed it... but I still didn't give the series a try. Anyways, I'm so so glad I didn't put it off any longer because I loved the book! I want to smack myself for not beginning the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series sooner. If I thought the movie was good, well, the book was certainly much better (as is almost always the case). Percy may be a young MC, but he narrates with a voice that feels like he's speaking directly to you with a light sarcasm that simply makes you smile. Percy Jackson's life is about to get a lot more complicated. His best friend Grover is actually a satyr and it turns out his substitute teacher was literally from the Underworld... and Percy himself? Well, he's actually a demigod- the son of Poseidon, the God of the Sea. If that wasn't enough, Zeus's lightening bolt has been stolen and Zeus is all too ready to place the blame on our young hero Percy, suspecting Poseidon has been plotting to overthrow him. Now Percy must set out on a quest with Grover, and fellow half-blood Annabeth, the daughter of Athena, in order to clear his name and retrieve the lightening bolt. Percy only has ten days to succeed and prevent a war between the Gods. No pressure. The Lightening Thief was one fun, wild thrill ride that I wished would never end! I loved how Riordan brings Greek mythology back to life, adding in his own modern twists to create an immensely enjoyable story. There was ever a dull moment! I'll be stealing- I mean, borrowing- the next book in the series, The Sea of Monsters, from my relative the first chance I get... that's for sure. You can also check out the review at:
