Percy Jackson's Greek Gods

by Rick Riordan, John Rocco

Disney Book Group | August 19, 2014 | Kobo Edition (eBook)

Percy Jackson's Greek Gods is rated 5 out of 5 by 10.
"A publisher in New York asked me to write down what I know about the Greek gods, and I was like, Can we do this anonymously? Because I don't need the Olympians mad at me again. But if it helps you to know your Greek gods, and survive an encounter with them if they ever show up in your face, then I guess writing all this down will be my good deed for the week." So begins Percy Jackson's Greek Gods, in which the son of Poseidon adds his own magic--and sarcastic asides--to the classics. He explains how the world was created, then gives readers his personal take on a who's who of ancients, from Apollo to Zeus. Percy does not hold back. "If you like horror shows, blood baths, lying, stealing, backstabbing, and cannibalism, then read on, because it definitely was a Golden Age for all that." Dramatic full-color illustrations throughout by Caldecott Honoree John Rocco make this volume--a must for home, library, and classroom shelves--as stunning as it is entertaining.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book This book is easy to read and illustrations are gorgeous. I love the way how Percy used modern days' examples to make the stories more interesting. Young people can definitely relate to some of the situations. He also does not take himself too seriously which makes it a great book to read at night.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic addition to your library! I am a huge fan of Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson works and this was a great addition to the collection. This book was a complete delight to read from beginning to end. Percy's voice is so sarcastic and wonderful. I just love how he's always adding little modern details to the stories to make it more interesting. Percy doesn't sugar coat anything when it comes to his opinions on the gods and their crazy actions, which makes his story telling so much more relatable to the modern audience. His voice is also easy to read and understand, which makes it perfect for the junior classroom. I think children are going to be able to learn and process (and remember!) these stories so much easier now. The illustrations in this book are gorgeous. I'm so glad they stuck with John Rocco for the art because if they kept using the guy who did the portraits in The Demigod Diaries then this would have been one ugly book. I heard the UK print version of Percy Jackson's Greek Gods doesn't come with illustrations and I feel very sorry for those people. I think what makes this book such a valuable educational resource for children's literature is the fact that is has a good balance between text and art. Ancient Greek isn't easy to envision either so the illustrations support the stories. Overall, I was very pleased with this book and would encourage everyone to read it as well as all the teachers to add it to their classroom shelves.
