Persuasion was the final work of the formidable Jane Austen. With a much more relaxed tone and whimsical spirit, it endures as one of the favorites amongst her readers. It tells the story of the lives of loves of Sir Walter Elliot, his daughters Elizabeth, Anne, and Mary, and a whole host of relatives, friends, and suitors.

Central to the novel is Anne’s spoiled romance with Captain Frederick Wentworth, a seaman with whom Anne has been in love since they met. Upon their first meeting, Sir Walter Elliot refused the relationship and judged Wentworth to be an inappropriate match. But now, eight years later, things have changed. Captain Wentworth has made a name for himself in the navy and is held in a high regard. But eight years is a long time and Anne must decide if the feelings she once had still exist.

In a word, Persuasion is charming. The detailed setting in the 19th-century English countryside attracts the readers, but it is Austen’s poignant satire and unforgettable characters that keep and delight them.
