NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Discover Captain Phasma’s mysterious history in this “Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi” novel.

One of the most cunning and merciless officers of the First Order, Captain Phasma commands the favor of her superiors, the respect of her peers, and the terror of her enemies. But for all her renown, Phasma remains as virtually unknown as the impassive expression on her gleaming chrome helmet. Now, an adversary is bent on unearthing her mysterious origins—and exposing a secret she guards as zealously and ruthlessly as she serves her masters.

Deep inside the Battlecruiser Absolution, a captured Resistance spy endures brutal interrogation at the hands of a crimson-armored stormtrooper—Cardinal. But the information he desires has nothing to do with the Resistance or its covert operations against the First Order.

What the mysterious stormtrooper wants is Phasma’s past—and with it whatever long-buried scandal, treachery, or private demons he can wield against the hated rival who threatens his own power and privilege in the ranks of the First Order. His prisoner has what Cardinal so desperately seeks, but she won’t surrender it easily. As she wages a painstaking war of wills with her captor, bargaining for her life in exchange for every precious revelation, the spellbinding chronicle of the inscrutable Phasma unfolds. But this knowledge may prove more than just dangerous once Cardinal possesses it—and once his adversary unleashes the full measure of her fury.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A character study in villainy. Story Review: Phasma is the story of the eponymous character who first appeared in Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens. From humble beginnings on a barely surviveable world the story is told by those who knew her as a warrior, leader and soldier. The book revealed much of the character's formative history and provides much needed explanation as to her motivations from the movie. Moving from her teens, to her discovery by the first order, to her rise in station, then finally a coda on her childhood it paints the character not in her own words and feelings but from a distance, one that the character cultivates intentionally. The book shows this unambiguously, refusing to make her heroic or tragic. She remains a villain, not pitiable or possibly even redeemable. Where the story fell flat was the limited canvas on which to work. The book is a character study on someone who takes action, thinks a lot (or so were told), but doesn't say much. The limited third person perspective of the story makes it feel like a campfire ghost story, but it lacks much in the way of dramatic presence. This has to be supplied instead by the narrator character(s). Also tiresome are the thinly veiled story structure (Lord of the Rings, anyone) and plot devices. A small unexpected bright-spot was Ms. Dawson's indictment of modern society's unwillingness to address future structural problems. A seeming throw away about 2/3 through, it could have benefited the final conclusion, but I feel it was lost in the action shuffle. All in all, not the worst Star Wars book, but it also suffers from trying to set up a character that cannot be resolved as she must appear in the next movie, if not two. Audio review: Ms. Lavoy makes a wonderful return to the Star Wars galaxy. She is able to wonderfully voice the two main narrators as well as Phasma. The Star Wars Audibook team delivers wonderful production value again with score and sound effects, making sure to never overdo it as has sometimes been the case in the past.
