The #1 internationally bestselling author returns with a new novel in the vein of the New York Times bestsellers Pretty Girls and The Good Daughter—a story even more electrifying, provocative, and suspenseful than anything she’s written before.

What if the person you thought you knew best turns out to be someone you never knew at all . . . ?

Andrea Cooper knows everything about her mother Laura. She’s knows she’s spent her whole life in the small beachside town of Gullaway Island; she knows she’s never wanted anything more than to live a quiet life as a pillar of the community; she knows she’s never kept a secret in her life. Because we all know our mothers, don’t we?

But all that changes when a Saturday afternoon trip to the mall explodes into violence and Andrea suddenly sees a completely different side to Laura. Because it turns out that before Laura was Laura, she was someone completely different. For nearly thirty years she’s been hiding from her previous identity, lying low in the hope that no one will ever find her. But now she’s been exposed, and nothing will ever be the same again.

Twenty-four hours later Laura is in the hospital, shot by an intruder who’s spent thirty years trying to track her down and discover what she knows. Andrea is on a desperate journey following the breadcrumbs of her mother’s past. And if she can’t uncover the secrets hidden there, there may be no future for either one of them. . . .

Karin Slaughter was born in Georgia on January 6, 1971. In 2001, she published her first novel, Blindsighted, which made the Dagger Award shortlist for Best Thriller Debut. She is the author of the Grant County series and the Will Trent series. Her stand-alone novels include Cop Town and Pretty Girls.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The most compelling Slaughter read yet! I think we can all just go ahead and acknowledge Karin Slaughter as the queen of twisting, gripping, what the hell will happen next mysteries. She is an author that NEVER fails me when I need something juicy to dive into. How she consistently writes these dark, wild, compulsively readable books over and over and over is beyond me, but heavens knows I am grateful to be a fan! Pieces of Her is just completely mind blowing in its complexity and uniqueness. I had only the vaguest idea of what the plot was when I jumped into this one, and as always I found myself on a RIDE. Sometimes I genuinely love when I don’t have a full picture of what I am about to read, because I can’t start guessing on what is going to happen by the end of the second chapter. Especially when it comes to mysteries, I want to be on the edge of my seat from start to end. Karin manages to create that level of suspense every single time, like I know something juicy is coming, but that could be ANYTHING and there is only one way to find out - ignore all my adult responsibilities, cancel plans and stay in, and up all night, to FIND OUT. Synopsis: Andy believes she knows everything there is to know about her mother, Laura. Until a trip to the local mall explodes into violence and suddenly Andy has no idea what she has just witnessed her mother doing. Her mother who won’t speak to anyone, especially the police, leaving Andy to follow a trail of clues to try to figure out the secrets that Laura never wanted uncovered. To say that Karin Slaughter is a tremendous author is an understatement - she weaves a complex story within a story, moving from past to present deftly, tying every event together in ways that keep you hooked page after page. The amount of detail that is hidden chapter to chapter is mind boggling, and every twist is devastatingly clever. I could have honestly read an entire book based on Laura’s backstory, with all the exquisite detail of that mayhem. I ADORE that Laura’s character was so wildly complicated, unreliable and surprising. THESE are the women I want to read - characters who are unpredictable. I am not exaggerating when I say I inhaled this book (like I always do with her work) and I cannot say it enough - if you need mystery that’s got some meat to it, look no further because this is the perfect autumn read for you.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Stand alone from Slaughter Karin Slaughter's latest is Pieces of Her. Her own life has had its ups and downs, but the one person Andrea could always count was her mother Laura. Laura has lived in the same city for over thirty years, she's recognized as a community leader, speech pathologist, reliable, kind, generous and more. But when Laura and Andrea are caught in the middle of a shooting, Laura reacts unexpectedly. And after the event, she won't talk about it and tells Andrea to leave - now. Andrea procrastinates and again witnesses her mother in another unthinkable situation. A cryptic set of instructions send Andrea on a search for the past.Who is her mother - or rather who was she? What a great premise! Pieces of Her is told in alternating POV's from Andrea and Laura, both past (1986) and present (2018). The beginning belongs to Andrea and the tension of those first chapters is almost unbearable - I was tempted to commit the sin of peeking ahead and then going back. And where Slaughter takes her story next is completely unpredictable - I did not see what was coming at all. Laura's history was genuinely a surprise. But you know what they say - you can't keep the past buried. Past and present have collided and how it plays out is a non-stop, action filled read. I did find some of the plot a bit improbable and needed to take it with a few grains of salt, but this didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book. My feelings for both women changed over the course of the book many times. Andrea is an immature whiner in the beginning, but grows as she pursues her search for answers. And I'd have to say the same for Laura. Present day Laura is kick-butt, but the Laura of the past is weaker as well. Pieces of Her was a good, albeit somewhat different read from Slaughter. I enjoyed it, but am hoping Will is due for a new book next up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing As an employee I had the pleasure of being able to read an advance copy of this book, and it did not disappoint; as Karin Slaughter does it again. She is an amazing writer and this book is a fun thrill ride from start to finish as it drives home the point that you don't always really know the people closest to you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Slaughter kills again! (had to do it haha) I'm loving the direction new Karin Slaughter novels have been going in the last several years. PIECES OF HER didn't get nearly as dark as previous books, but the complex storylines still took me for a wild ride. The relationship between mothers and daughters can be sticky, and Slaughter placed that layered dynamic into a story that had my jaw grazing the floor. No possible way you'll be able to guess where this one takes you and in the end, I predict you'll want to hug your mum, even if she's been lying to your for your entire life. Oh. Well maybe that just applies to Andy. ;)
