Rated 2 out of 5 by from Incomplete I'm a big fan Crichton's, but this is not one of his best works. This novel is a prime example of the fact that sometimes there is a good reason why authors choose not to have their own creations published. Set during the golden age of privateering, the novel follows the adventures of Captain Charles Hunter as he attempts a daring raid of the fortified Spanish fortress of Matanceros. Pirate Latitudes has its moments - intense action sequences that often get resolved in unexpected ways. In addition, keeping true to his style, Crichton inserts many fascinating factual details about piracy in that era that often don't make it into other media about the subject. As such, the novel is at times both entertaining and educational. However, the elements that work are loosely hung on a plot that often meanders without purpose. Plot elements are introduced and then are never resolved. The overall story ends up feeling like a hodgepodge of vaguely-connected ideas that never come together as a coherent whole. So even though the book provides sporadic rewards to the reader, there is never any sense of closure. Unfortunately, this manuscript was better off sitting as an unpublished draft in Chriton's desk. I would only recommend this book to those who are serious about completing their Michael Crichton collection.

“The plot sucks you in like the giant kraken monster that nearly sinks our hero’s galleon.”
