With this fourth volume of our beloved series, Segar's Popeyereaches one of its highest peaks in "Plunder Island," the glorious, epic-lengthSunday-continuity adventure that ran for eight months and pitted the intrepidsailorman against the malevolent Sea Hag and the Goon - helped, and sometimeshindered by, the easily corruptible J. Wellington Wimpy. "Plunder Island" ispresented here for the first time in its full, full-color, uncut glory!Meanwhile, in the "dailies" section of Popeye Volume 4: PlunderIsland, Popeye visits "Poodleburg," gets involved in a quest for both"Romance and Riches," and much more. Comics historian Richard Marschallcontributes an article on Segar's storytelling skills and narrative strategies, focusing in particular on the "Plunder Island" sequence. Rediscover an Americantreasure in this handsomely designed series to be enjoyed by comic fans of allages.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great collection of classic Popeye comics The fourth in a six volume series reprinting E.C. Segar's Popeye stories from the comic strip Thimble Theatre. It contains the black and white dailies and the colour Sunday pages, along with the topper strip Sappo and other extras originally included in the newspapers. The characters and plots in Segar's strip are more complex than in the animated Popeye cartoons most people are more familiar with. Once again Fantagraphics has done a great job of presenting a classic comic strip in a well-designed package.
