about

" Postcolonial Theory and Psychoanalysis" examines the limitations of using psychoanalysis to theorize colonial and post colonial cultures. This book provides unique focus - no book yet published which looks at the joint history of psychoanalysis and postcolonialism in tandem. The author`s writing style opens up the work of key critics and difficult theoretical concepts in an accessible way. Race, postcolonialism and psychoanalysis are all widely-studied at degree and postgraduate level. As well as providing a thematic survey of postcolonial theory, this book also includes detailed readings of key texts such as Fanon`s " Black Skin White Masks" , Nandy`s " The Intimate Enemy" and Bhabha`s " The Location of Culture" .Psychoanalytic theory has been the critical instrument of choice for colonial critics. This book examines why critics who are otherwise suspicious of Western forms of knowledge are drawn to psychoanalytic theories, and whether it is possible to use such theories without reproducing the colonial discourse that also structures psychoanalytic thought.
