Rationalistic and Liberal Christians in general have either denied, or seriously doubted, that Jesus and his apostles really held the doctrine of a personal devil in chief, of demons or evil spirits who sometimes obsessed, possessed, and infested mankind in the flesh, of angelic beings manifesting themselves on remarkable occasions to the human senses, and of all kindred spiritualistic phenomena. They grant that the literal record so reads, but contend that Christ only accommodated himself to the errors and prejudices of his times, deeming it unwise to combat them on these points, whilst in fact he knew and inwardly regarded all these phenomena as mere natural ones, having no supermundane origin or character. But our leftwing ultras, from Theodore Parker downward and outward, unable to abide any such special pleading, and utterly discarding the whole New Testament angelology, dcmonology, and supernaturalism, as merely mythic, have squarely pronounced Jesus an imperfect, fallible, and erring religious teacher,--honest and excellent in some respects, but ignorant and superstitious in others, of which this must certainly be...
