about

A stranger has come to Middleburg, Maryland, a visitor from abroad with a mysterious purpose. But this quaint, affluent community has dark secrets of its own. And when the interloper, Peter Stewart, becomes involved with the bewitching, seductive ward of noted local author Kate More, the townfolk fear the chilling past they are hiding will no longer be safe. For Middleburg has a colonial history of malevolent sorceries and obscene sacrifice. And when the terrible pot is stirred, murder may be the least of the evils to emerge from the unholy brew.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't bother trying to figure it out - just enjoy the ride! As always, Barbara Michaels, who's really Elizabeth Peters, spins a fantastic story, which snares you in it's web right from page one, and doesn't let go until the end! In the small, exclusive, and very private town of Middleburg, Maryland, everyone knows everyone and outsiders are not encouraged. Nevertheless, a visitor has arrived from England, ostensibly to do research for a book on folklore, which Middleburg has a reputation for knowing about. Especially, their own local expert professor, Kate More. It's actually kind of hard to give a synopsis of this book without giving things away too much. The book is reminiscent of Agatha Christie, because you really have no idea from one moment to the next who is who, what their true motivations are, and what is a red herring or an actual truth in the plot. As always Peters, writing as Michaels creates an excellently exciting story with all kinds of twists and turns, and just when you think you might have figured out what's really going on, she'll throw a wrench into the works so that you realize you really don't have a clue. Best just to read the book [which is a very fast and easy read in addition to being full of excitement and suspense] and enjoy the story as it plays out to a terrific ending!
